The service is friendly but on the weekends sometimes a little slow. They have the best Balsamic Vinegar I've had any place. The lamb is excellent. The outside dinning over looking the Alster is great. Good wine list. Reservations a must on the weekends.

Really enjoyed this place last night. Right on the lake, literally and a nice approach to service, friendly and efficient but somehow relaxed and unobtrusive too. The lobster pasta was a surprise coming as a full half lobster which looked stunning on plate. Really nice place overall and very good service.

I visited this place for a business dinner and all in all I was happy when I left. The price/quality -ratio is very good actually.

Starter: a tasty carpaccio - the only minus is that it was slightly frozen in the middle - meaning of course that it came from the freezer. But the taste and the quality of the meat was nevertheless formidable. Main course - linguine with sea food - even this dish was good.
The vine list is good and you get a decent wine for an ixpensive price.

The setting is nice as the place is located just at the river banks of the Alster so be sure to face the water for an nice view..

NB: if you don't know Hamburg and arrive with the taxi, it might be worthwile to check in advance where the place is on the map. At least two taxi drivers who drove my colleagues didn't find the place immediately as it is a bit hidden on the river banks and it can't be easilty spotted to the street.

We visited friends in Hamburg last week where we were very impressed by this city which sits on a multitude of canals and is crossed by over a thousand bridges. We also availed of the Beatles tour (courtesy of Stephanie) which brought us back to the 60's and great memories.

Another good memory will be of a lovely restaurant which sits on the central lake in mid-city. One can look out at the swans as menus are perused - Portonovo is an Italian restaurant which strays into European tastes as well. The restaurant projects a warm atmosphere, boasts a wide-ranging menu and has a very palatable wine list.

Between four of us, we sampled duck, sole and venison after having agreed a "banquet" of starter dishes, all of which were really fresh and delicious. Both red and white wines went down very well and the main courses received plenty of praise from the four of us. The staff were very responsive and very friendly and we had a most enjoyable evening.

This is a very popular restaurant which requires advance reservation - it is easy to see why because this place invites one to relax, enjoy the view, the food and the company. Hamburg, which seems to be a wealthy location, is well worth a visit and, if there, find time to dine at Portonovo - you will not be disappointed.
