For those of us that lived through the cold war and heard about this place on the nightly news, it was nice to see it in person. A tip for coming here is go before 10 am and the crowds start to get really big, this will give you a chance to take pictures with not a lot of people milling around.

Compared with the rich and varied way Berlin manages to inform, connect and help visitors to reflect on the atrocities on this ground Checkpoint Charlie manages to be equal and opposite. You will gain nothing from this stop other than to roll your eyes. Perhaps a useful exercise in itself.

It has to be done on a visit to Berlin, I suppose, but thankfully that is one 'attraction' which is over now and need never be repeated! What a shame in an otherwise fabulous city.
Checkpoint Charlie is a fake, tourist attraction with actors dressed in military gear, no information, just gimmick, really pretty disappointing. Opposite however is a fairly interesting courtyard display of people who tried to cross the wall - successes and failures.

I visited check point charlie. In 1990..today the east berlin side is gone and the west side is a show not real..but a must to tick off.

The check point is in the middle of the road and is manned by actors dressed in period military cloths for tourists to have their pictures taken. The checkpoint is free to visit but the museum is expensive and was boiling hot in early April.
