Once you are in the old town and have reached the river you cannot miss this spectacular looking fortress up on the hill. We used google maps to guide us up to the fortress but there are some public footpath signs to help you as well - once you are on the assent up the hill you cannot really go wrong.

The views from the fortress across the old town are well worth the climb. There is no lift, however if you are used to visiting castles and fortresses in places like Bavaria, Austria etc. it is nowhere as steep or tall as some others! There is a stepped or smooth path for you to take. It took us around 15 minutes to get up with some view admiring.

Once you reach the top if you turn left there is a ticket office where you can buy a ticket for either the fortress or the museum or a combination ticket. The attended was very helpful and cheerful. The combination ticket was only around 6EUR so it doesn't break the bank and you get some enjoyable hours looking around.

The inside of the fortress was bigger than I expected, they have some historic articles from the period when it was inhabited. For those of you that do not read German then you will only be able to admire them and wonder. They also have large exhibitions dedicated to how the town developed over time which was fascinating and well done, which then leads on to show what I first thought was an "apocalypse" model of the town - which on closer inspection actually showed how the town looked after the WW2 bombings. I am not one for war history, however this exhibition was very well put together, makes you think and shows how well the town was put back together again afterwards.

Please note you cannot take photographs inside the fortress but you can take photos of the outside areas.

Overall it was a very pleasant day out which was good value for money. If you do not want to go into the buildings then to walk around the courtyards and garden/wall areas it is free.

Always worth a visit. Even without paying for a ticket, there’s plenty to see. Views are impressive, and fortress is interesting.

Great views from here of the city, river, vineyards and beautiful bridge!!! Unfortunately it’s under construction. More signs are needed to help you find you way around... once we got up there we weren’t sure what to do besides enjoy the view... they have a nice restaurant inside...

A must for tourists. Nearly anybody visiting Würzburg comes here. Best view over the town. In addition you can catch a guided tour through the castle. There is a beergarden and a restaurant as well upon this hill and a big museum for franconian culture. Do not miss the little souvenire shop right in front of the main gate. You can take a short walk from the old bridge up to this place.

It is a bit of an effort to climb up the stairs to the get to the castle, but it is very worth it. Not only is the castle itself beautifully maintained, it also occupies a commanding position over the city, with great views.
