“In memory of MJ”

Michael Jackson Memorial
Reviewed 6 April 2018 via mobile

This is actually a statue built in memory of a German composer. However, it 'evolved' into a Michael Jackson memorial. People placed photos and memorabilia of Michael Jackson here, so it became his memorial.

Nothing much here, unless you are a MJ fan.

Unless you are a die hard MJ fan, I wouldn't exactly say this is a must visit, but hey, if you are in the area as we were, check it out. Across the road from the Hotel Bayerischer hof ( where Michael stayed) in a little green park, is this memorial, loving maintained by fans. When we visited , a lady was tenderly dusting and aligning all the photos and flowers. We found it interesting, some may not.

Set up by MJ fans, its a tribute to him. This place is kept decorated at all times by his fans who take turns doing it. Candles and flowers have stood at the unofficial shrine outside the city’s Bayerischer Hof hotel every day since the singer’s death in 2009. Although it has never been officially sanctioned, the shrine has become a tourist sight, with national flags left by fans from around the world.
Nothing great, see it only if its on the way to any one of your destination.

After the he died in June, 2009, his fans set-up a makeshift memorial – the Michael Jackson Shrine at the base of a statue honouring the Franco-Flemish Renaissance composer Orlande de Lassus. It has become a pop pilgrimage site, adorned with flowers, candles, photographs, hand-written notes and other paraphernalia aka junk. Ironically, the memorial’s is across from the posh five-star hotel Bayerischer Hof, where Michael reportedly stayed. Some locals think it’s an eyesore but the memorial remains

During our Munich city walking tour, our guide pointed out this “memorial” in the Promenadenplatz. Although city officials have never officially sanctioned it, the shrine has become a tourist site with flowers, balloons, and national flags left by fans from around the world. The monument is actually a statue of Orlando di Lasso. He was a composer of the late Renaissance and one of the three most famous and influential musicians in Europe at the end of the 16th century.

While I am an enthusiastic fan of Michael Jackson, I find the desecration of a monument to an important historical figure irresponsible. Apparently, some Michael Jackson fans spontaneously created this “memorial” after his death. It is across the street from the hotel he used to stay in when in Munich.

It is neither a memorial nor anything special. If your tour guide points it out during your walking tour fine but I would not waste any time going out of your way to see it.
