The Hotel Daniel is a fairly modern, low-cost hotel situated less than 100 metres from Karlsplatz, one of the main gates into the heart of Munich. Its location is excellent; my partner and I were visiting for the Christmas markets and we were easily able to walk everywhere we wanted to get to over 3 days. And if do you want to travel further, there is an entrance to the S-bahn and U-bahn at Karlsplatz.
We stayed in a double room which was on the 1st floor. The room was small, but more than adequate and it was clean except for hair blocking the shower drain; a small oversight that did let things down.
The room was also very noisy especially on the 1st of our 3 night stay. I'm not sure whether it was due to the central heating in the ensuite shower room of the ensuite extraction fan system. Having been awoken, and kept awake from around 04.30, this was far from satisfactory. We raised the issue with reception the following day and the issue was satisfactorily resolved by both the central heating and extractor being turned off. Central heating wasn't an issue as, despite sub-zero temperatures for most of the day bathroom remained warm.
There was also a lot of external noise from building sites too, even though we were in a room, without a view, at the back. This was a minimal issue as work and noise started around 07.30 and there was not much that the hotel owners could do to stop it other than replace all their windows with a better quality double or triple glazing.
Although we were in a double room, it consisted of 2 single beds slide together. These were not particularly comfortable either as a single or double and this has had the greatest impact on my rating. I don't need a large room with lots of facilities, but I do want a comfortable bed and a good night's sleep. There was also no tea and coffee making facility in the room. If you crave TV, this was limited to German channels only.
Other aspects of the hotel were good or very good. The shower was great; really powerful with no shortage of hot water. A safe is provided in the room and cupboard space is more than adequate for a few days or a week. All the staff were very friendly and helpful with 2 receptionists at busy times and one the rest of the time. The breakfast was plentiful with a selection of cereals, fruit salad, yogurts, cold meats and cheeses, various breads etc in abundance. It was as good as any continental breakfast I've had. Whilst there were no lunch or evening eating arrangements or bar, which some people might want, you do have all the bars and restaurants of central Munich at your beck and call.
This came so close to being a really good hotel within its category; if only the beds had been more comfortable.
