All the pictures are exactly what you get: clean white linen spa-type rooms with tall ceilings, huge windows, and a four-post canopy bed: divine. Only complaint is no luggage rack to hold a suitcase. Bathroom was European wonderful, the staff was exceptionally friendly and helpful, breakfast was good (though not exceptional: we were spoiled by previous hotels throughout the trip, but it was just fine), and the location was nothing sort of superb: in the old town, overlooking the river, and not a minutes walk from the main walking plaza and only 15 minutes walk from Heidelberg Castle. Highly recommended. One note regarding those who arrive by auto: parking, while very affordable, is off sight, meaning you have to park illegally to get a pass to legally travel the pedestrian-only road to get to the hotel for check-in and luggage delivery before proceeding on to the parking lot. Not impossible, as long as you know what to expect.

I have spent a lot of time in HD --- 18 months in the military; many visits while touring in Europe and lastly on business trips to my employer (for 10 years) who had their HQ there. I have stayed mostly at the Crown Plaza plus a few other hotels (Renaissance, Bayrischer Hof and others in the suburbs). Hotel Villa Marstall was special - the hotel, their location, their breakfast and their owner & his staff. It is located in a building that was originally part of the University of Heidelberg and came into existence only a few years ago. It is a very short walk to either the Hauptstrasse or the Alte Brucke so you are dead center in the Old City. Our room was reasonably large (on the 2nd Floor corner with limited view of the Schloss (castle) and also the Neckar River. The bathroom was very nice. Breakfast in the basement (really neat rooms with vaulted ceilings) was excellent ---- lots of fresh fruit and fantastic pastries and rolls.

Parking is a two blocks away in a city garage below the castle. Navigation to the hotel will be challenging for most (I know the city really well, so I was able to find the hotel and the parking garage [after dropping off my luggage]; Altstadt Heidelberg has many small, one-way streets; you can find the hotel along the river between the Alte Brucke and the Marstall (large building along the river with 4 towers).

Room Tip: corner room

Hotel Villa Marstall was wonderful! We stayed two nights on our honeymoon and the hotel was all around great. Great location in Old Heidelburg. Right on the river. Easy to get to from main train station in Heidelburg. The reception staff were very helpfull (unless you need help past 10pm but that was ok) We had the room with the balcony and it was very nice and comfortable. We will be back! Our Heidelburg visit was one of our favorite places we visited on our honeymoon.

This kind of small boutique hotel offers a great service/acommodation for a good price. Our room was very clean, quiet (even on the 1st floor) and comfortable. The breakfast worths the price. I definitely recommend this hotel.
