The hotel is near the Neckar and requires a pleasant walk to get across the bridge to the Altstadt. Staff are all very gracious and pleasant, and the 1/2 bottle of wine was a lovely welcome. We found our Chinese -decorated room over stuffed, more like a B and B than a hotel, but the bed was certainly comfortable and the amenities all very good. I wish we had had a view of the river (like the one on the website). The Mensurstube restaurant was better than we expected for so small a place, and the "student prince" atmosphere is wonderful--our table, as it happens, had Bismarck's autograph indelibly etched into it.

Stayed in early December for Christmas markets in Heidelberg. Love this hotel, had stayed here 12 years ago and it was as nice as I had remembered. Wonderful room - The blue berry suite. So much history and still owned and operated by the Kraft family. So many nice touches. Wonderful breakfast. Across the river from old town, but a very easy walk. Hope to return again.

Room Tip: I believe all are suites, at least with a nice sitting area. We had the Blue Berry Suite.

Situated around 20 mins walk from the Altstadt,on the opposite side of the river, this is a simply lovely old hotel. The walk into town affords lovely views of the river, the castle, and the town bridge and gates. In the evening this is a delight.
The hotel is well appointed, and just wonderful to be in;the furnishings and decoration are simply gorgeous. Its guest history is well documented.
Our room was spacious and well appointed, with chairs, chesterfield etc everywhere. It had great character.
Reception was friendly and punctilious;there are generations of expertise at making guests feel welcome here.
Service in the restaurant was similarly excellent;friendly, but professional, with really good wine suggestions.
A previous Tripadvisor review suggested a rather haughty attitude at work here;we found absolutely no trace of this.
The food in the main restaurant (the gastronomic restaurant was closed on the night we chose to eat in) was of a good standard.
One thing;such excellence does not come cheap - all consumables are at the top end in price terms.
This is fine, but when something doesn't quite work,it is noticeable. Our room safe didn't work;we asked twice for it to be activated, but this hadn't happened by the time we left after three nights.
Probably a one off;but at a headline room rate of 285e pn,it simply shouldn't have happened.
Speaking of rates,we got a really good 3 night deal;well worth chasing up.
We would love to return, this time making more use of the hotel facilities (as first time visitors to Heidelberg we were more out than in).
Highly recommended, and as a destination in its own right

The Hotel Hirschgasse is a real gem! It is situated in a residential area, at the foot of a hill (far away enough from the "crowds" of tourists, but only a 15-minute walk to the old town). The hotel offers a free outdoor parking. We lodged in the Peking Suite, decorated with both Chinese and European features. The room was huge, so was the bathroom. We were happy to finish our holidays in Hirschgasse, because of the personal touch (the hotel boasts lots of history!) and service. We were offered a glass of sparkling wine upon arrival (and a complimentary bottle of red wine was definitely a nice and unexpected bonus). We had dinner in their traditional restaurant, and it was delicious and well presented (bravo to the French Chef!). The breakfast was also fabulous. The Hirschgasse Hotel is most certainly a come back place!

This is not a modern hotel, so if you are looking for modern conveniences (e.g. Air Conditioning) it may not be for you. A previous reviewer mentioned "Laura Ashley" and I agree that pretty much sums it up. However, there are lots of little touches for those who don't mind: Very warm and efficient reception staff, the fact that it IS quaint, your name outside your door (hand written) a welcome package including wine and genuine charm. It has parking, is quietly located but not so far from the centre for those who remember what their feet are for. It's a very pleasant walk indeed along the river path to the bridges.
It also boast one the finest restaurants we've eaten in, which I've submitted a separate review for. If you want exceptional cuisine and a very nice place to stay rolled into one, it's easy to recommend here.
