The castle in Heidelberg is seriously a "must see" experience. We walked up the 313 steps from the cobblestone streets below and enjoyed the awesome view from above once we reached the castle at around 11pm. What a treat. The air is clean there, the people are friendly amd the prices are reasonable.

A beautiful view of the town. Spectacular images from atop the castle property. If walking, a steep hill but well worth it. The castle is lovely to view.

The day was rainy and cold but the castle beckoned, and it was our last day here. However, from beginning to end our visit was great. Easy to buy a ticket from the machines right at the entrance to the funicular, for 12 euros. That bought the trip up and back and entrance to the castle, the apothecary museum and the grounds.

The individual audio tour guide with headset was an additional 5 euros which we found rather steep but it was very informative. The laminated map of the castle and grounds needs to be made smaller or folded so that one can manage a camera, the handset for the audio tour, and still readily refer to the map.

We found the apothecary museum excellent. It was extensive, informative and well laid out. The history of pharmaceutical development was enlightening and was accompanied by lots of interesting artifacts. Who knew that coffee with a bit of chocolate is a homeopathic remedy? Yeah!

The largest wine barrel of 220,000 litres was the final highlight. Nice to be able to walk all over it. Too bad the wine tasting bar was not manned during our time there. The sign stated "be right back" but whoever it was did not come back during our 20 plus minutes there.

All in all, a really good experience.

Beautiful views to the city center. Be sure to see the wine barrel and take the train to the city center at the end of your visit I

I've wanted to visit this castle for years from the pictures I had seen . We got here on a rainy and cold day, but that didn't stop us admiring the views from the balconies facing the old city. We gave the tour a miss as English tours are rather infrequent. The standard ticket still includes a visit to the big wine barrel in the basement and the apothecary museum. We had a great laugh too as we could not find the funicular station and ended up walking all the way up from the town. I have to state that they are open every day of the week including Mondays which is how we made it there ourselves. Most attractions in Germany tend to be shut on Mondays.
