“Typical old French hotel”
Reviewed 7 May 2012

One -night stay at this cheap 2 Star hotel, we actually expected the worst but were a bit surprised to find a spacious, labyrinth hotel located in the center of the town; one part of which must have been renovated recently while the other part was in waiting. The room itself was small, clean and had sufficient room for our luggage. Breakfast was ok but not worth 8 euros. Service was good and the staff spoke perfect English.

Room Tip: An underground parking garage is located at the train station approx. 300m away from the hotel. Rest...

We stayed in Vienne on our way to the South. Our family room was clean and quiet with the window shut, so we slept very well. Slightly tired decor. Staff were friendly and helpful, and there is a good choice of restaurants nearby. It was nice to be able to walk around town and see some Roman buildings even though we arrived rather late in the day; however, traffic on the narrow roads was a bit challenging. Parking is another issue - the hotel does not have its own, so before 7 at night and after 9am you have to pay and are restricted to 2 hours in the centre.

We stayed here for five night whilst visiting friends, the hotel staff were very welcoming, plus one of the owners is English, so if you get stuck with the language they will be able to help you.

I would recommend a two night stop over if you are just passing through as this is an old Roman town which has an amazing complete Roman temple tucked away down a side street which is surreal as you just don't expect to see this in France. Also if you walk along the river and cross the bridge you will come to a Roman museum which is situated on a 7 hectare site, inside there are complete Roman mosaics and other amazing Roman artifacts; outside you can walk down Roman street where villas and shops once stood.

My main advice is not to travel late at night to Lyon airport as you will miss the last train to VIenne! There is not a dire t train from the airport you will need to either take a taxi or use the tram to Part Deux rail staton and get the connection from there if you miss it it will cost you €85 by taxi....

We stopped in Vienne not as a destination stop, but to break up the drive between Beaune and Arles. The town is fine and the river is nice, but there's not really a lot to see there. The Grand Hotel de la Poste is a nice hotel in a convenient location, close to restaurants & shops. The front desk folks were very nice and spoke English. Mariana was absolutely wonderful.

Our room and our bathroom were a bit small, but it was nice, and clean, and for the price (€64) it was well worth it. The bed was a comfy queen sized bed with very nice linens and a lovely comforter. We had a very good nights sleep. One thing I really appreciated was having an electrical outlet in the bathroom to use my curling iron (very often the outlet in the bathroom is for shavers only). Bad thing was that this was the only outlet in the room, so my husband and I had to take turns charging our cell phones in the bathroom - not a huge deal. Also, for the TV watchers - the TV is a bit small, but we didn't use it anyway so it didn't matter to us.

There is no parking garage at the hotel, but there is a public parking lot nearby. However, we were able to get a metered parking spot right in front of the hotel. FYI - for the metered parking on the street, park in the spot, then go to a machine to pay for the ticket and place it on your dashboard. Important note: If you want to extend your stay at that spot, you MUST go to a different machine to buy another ticket. You cannot buy another ticket at the same machine.

If ever in Vienne again, we would definitely consider staying at this hotel.
