“real charm, great atmosphere”
Reviewed 4 February 2011

I chose the Petit Palais on the basis of TripAdvisor reviews and because I didn't want to stay in the noisy center of Nice. I was not disappointed! It's a great antidote to concrete box chain hotels, has great atmosphere and great views. Why does it have great views? It's in the neighborhood of Cimiez, which is hilly. This does not mean mountaineering, but it does mean that you have to be able to make it up and down moderately sloping streets. By the most direct route (get a map, and don't follow the winding avenue Bieckert down the hill!) it takes about 20 minutes to get to the Place Massena on foot. Cimiez is also mostly residential, so if you don't want a ten-minute walk to the nearest cafes or restaurants, you will have to rely on the hotel. Breakfast is an optional buffet, and there is a pretty good choice of food, including room service items. Prices not cheap, though. My room had a small outdoor area with a table and chairs, great to be able to throw open the doors even in the cold of January, The room itself was a decent size, well decorated, clean and comfortable, with a renovated marble bathroom. The staff were helpful and incredibly charming. The only downsides of this hotel are that you can expect to hear some noise, because it's an old building that has been subdivided, and that there is not much information in the rooms (no wi-fi details but don't worry, it's there, and it's free, you just need an access code from reception).

Quiet hotel, located up a twisty road, so you'd want to be fond of walking up hills. The rooms and bathrooms were very clean. Breakfast was OK. The staff, with one notable exception, was friendly and cheerful. There was one particular member of staff who was not friendly in the slightest, and acted like guests were an inconvenience.

Apart from that, I can highly recommend this hotel.

Stayed here for one night in June 2010. A little difficult to get to, but well worth it. Parked right outside the hotel, there is a small carpark as well. I don't mind walking up hills but if you're not fit maybe don't stay here. The receptionist was very friendly and recommended a fantastic restaurant a ten minute walk away (it served delicious local style food). The room wasn't huge, but was very comfortable and clean. The reception stayed open until we'd arrived back after midnight. The breakfast was delicious with everything you could possibly want served under the beautiful trees on the terrace.

Situated in a quiet location, but impossible to reach: by car through narrow winding streets, by foot up a steep hill (if you don't have a super condition it is killing). There is no parking possibility in the neighbourhood (cars are parked on the street on cms from the houses and from each other). No restaurant, so eighter take a taxi (no public transport nearby), walk (see remarks on the steep hill) or go by car and loose your parking space you finally found. The splendid view over Nice did not exist in our room on the ground floor, in fact few people discovered this view. The woman at the reception was (mildly put) very unfriendly, let not say rude. Room service for a small snack was denied and the at the bar they refused to make cocktails ("no alcohol") although the bottles were clearly visible. The only positive on this hotel was the quality of the breakfast.
