“Ok for a short break but not a two week holidat”
Reviewed 16 July 2014 for a stay in July 2014

We stayed at this apartment for two weeks at the end of June/July. We were met on our arrival by Mary who explained the set-up. At this point we had to pay her €100 for cleaning and laundry and her time, of which we took up a maximum of 30 minutes, which I thought a little excessive. The bedding and towels we were allowed to use were already out for us but during the two weeks, if we wanted clean sheets and towels, we had to pay another €25 or take them to the laundry and do them ourselves. We therefore spent a sweaty fortnight in those sheets as I didn't fancy paying more or spending part of my holiday in the laundry.

We also had to give her another €200 as deposit against any breakages during our stay. This would be returned just prior to our leaving, meaning that we would have the cash bac, but no time to spend it. This was quite a chunk out of our holiday budget so anyone renting the apartment needs to make allowances for this. I must say though that Athena was excellent with the communication at all times during and after booking.

The apartment is small, so don't be taken in by the creative photos on the website. The living room is dominated by a huge air-conditioning unit, the size of a washing machine, with a big, thick pipe which had to be hung out of the window. There is no storage in the living area for your day-to-day bits and bobs so it was impossible to keep tidy. The silver chair has now seen better days and the seat is somewhat sunken. Although the apartment is only for two persons, the sofa is bed settee so a proper, more comfy sofa would be an advantage. It was quite dark in the living area as two of the three light bulbs
in the ceiling light were out. Cleanliness was a bit hit and miss with the microwave being quite dirty and all of the sink overflows were also dirty. Lots of dust under the bed and sofa bed.

The bedroom was very dark but the bed was comfy and there was plenty of wardrobe space. Best not to look out of the bedroom window as it looks into an air shaft, which is typical in old French buildings. There is a constant smell of food and kitchen noise coming into the bedroom window, via the air shaft, from an adjacent restaurant, and late at night, after we went to bed at around midnight'ish, every night, there is the noise of crockery being washed and general kitchen noise and talking. Very annoying. Because the air-conditioning unit was so noisy, we chose to sleep with the windows open and shutters closed, therefore noisy whicheverway we chose. Shower and separate toilet were ok but shower tray was very slow to drain and could do with some attention. On the plus side, there was always a plentiful supply of hot water and shower was a good size. The kitchen hob is very poor. It took me over fifteen minutes to get it warm enough to fry an egg.

I would advice anyone who is seeking a quiet and peaceful place to stay should not book this apartment. It is up a few steps from the daily fish market and the noise and clattering begins at around 6.30 in the morning when the stalls are being hammered together, the loud voices and motor noise, not forgetting the noise from the seagulls. There is also some kind of rubbish depository on St Francois square and the wagons are in and out all day and the sound of their reversing alarms is constant. The nature of the buildings means that every sound echo's up and down the narrow streets and alleys and you are living in very close proximity to lots of other people

The good points of the apartment are the location, right in the heart of the old town, and very convenient for trams and buses. You can jump on a tram which takes you straight to the railway station where you can easily get to Cannes, Monaco, Antibes etc. I would recommend the train over the buses, although they do cost more, as it was a real crush to get on the bus to Monaco and you had to be very lucky to get a seat for the hot, journey which was around an hour long. We came backle if you wanted to spend by train.

All in all, I would suggest that the apartment is more suited to a long weekend rather than a two week stay, due to the lack of any outside space and not very comfortabe if you want to spend some time relaxing, as is needed on a two week break. During a weekend, you would probably spend most of the time out and about, whereas we sometimes needed a quiet day in and we really missed the lack of any outside space.

Maybe the other reviewers stayed at a more quiet time of year as I don't understand why they said it was a quiet and peaceful area. I think we must be a lot more discerning than the other reviewers when it comes to our expectations of our holiday accommodation so will have to take more care in the future when it comes to choosing our holiday base.

Management Response

We appreciate your comments and hope you enjoyed a lovely holiday despite your inconveniences.
Had you contacted our (english speaking) local manager, who is available throughout your stay, she would happily have shown you how to use the cooker hob and improve the shower drainage and any other day-to-day problems to ensure your stay is comfortable.

Our T&Cs are well explained in all correspondence and advertising before and after you book so there are no hidden unexpected costs.

I stay in the apartment regularly and when I left a few weeks ago everything was as it should be. Yes, our silver chesterfield armchair is now looking a bit shabby, but is still so very comfortable.

Research shows that one of the many charms of Vieux Nice is its bustling lively alleys filled with artisan shops, cafes, restaurants, bars. Most visitors fall in love with it for its uniqueness and history, and accept that along with this will come noise, however as I and our many guests have found, St Francois is generally very quiet at night.

The seagulls? sorry, they're out of our control :)

Our stay at St. Francois couldn't have been any better. The apartment itself is a good size with all of the comforts of home. It's location in the old town, with easy access to the streets, shops, beaches, buses, etc. is perfect. Our only regret was having to leave.

We stayed here for 10 days as a holiday and a base for visiting the monaco gp. Fantastic location in the old town but tucked away enough that it wasn't noisy at night. Very handy for the buses (€1.50 anywhere) as most stop nearby. The apartment itself had everything we needed, lots of storage, good cooking supplies and by the end of the stay we felt totally at home. Only thing I disliked was the lighting in the bedroom, set to be romantic with lower lighting and lots of lamps but I found this a bit impractical (that said there are plenty of lights and mirrors elsewhere in the apartment). Owner and local contact both were very helpful and English speaking which was also great.

“Great apartment in a fantastic location!”
Reviewed 24 April 2014 for a stay in April 2014

Lovely comfortable apartment with everything you need in a brilliant location - there's so much choice for restaurants and shops nearby, and the beach and markets are easily within walking distance. Many attractions are not too far away but there are also lots of very accessible options for public transport too.

Both the owner and the local contact were an absolute pleasure to deal with and made the booking of / access to the property nice and easy, including lots of helpful information and recommendations.
