On our tour of Avignon our guide pointed out this beautiful building. It is not the original Opera House as that was burned down. This one dates from 1847 and been beautifully kept. It is worth stopping to view and if you have the time to pop inside.

Sculptures of the French playwrights Moliere and Corneille dominate the facade of this august Opera House. My femme quips that it seems perfect that these two dramatists are watching over the building, Cornielle the master of tragedy and Moliere the master of comedy.
We enter the theatre, emotions braced for a roller-coaster ride of passion and tragedy, knowing that comedy in the wings will cheer our souls. The atmosphere in the foyer is charged as we mingle together with the serious punters who look the part knowing every act and every aria, unlike novices like us.
Give me the unlikely love of a courtesan and a nobleman any day. Looking around, larger and more important opera houses pale into insignificance alongside this precious jewel of Avignon's. the decor is opulent, red velvet and fringing tassels aplenty with beautifully ornate balconies. the atmosphere is cosy and intimate.
The lights dim and the cacophony of chatter fades as the orchestra strikes up. The curtain rises. the courtesan starts her strut, with declarations of love left and right. Love , rejection , the full shtick. By the finale there is not a dry eye in the theatre. i think we are not shedding tears for Violetta and Alfredo, but for memories of our own broken hearts. There is a little bit of torturous, lost love in all of us tonight.
However short-lived this grand amour, the romantics among us are content, the depth of the feelings expressed tonight far outweigh the length of the love affair. The femme never short of a parting sentence, exclaims: "Real romance is the knowledge and experience of profound love". What can a humble male retort?

we were lucky enough that during our visit there was ballet on here and we got some great seats at a very reasonable price.Only 20 euros for front of dress circle, the performance was very enjoyable. Lovely old opera house quite small and intimate, very friendly people.

Small theatre but seating could do with a face-lift as seats too close to those in front. Needs more toilets. Very relaxed atmosphere and excellent concert, so worth the high ticket prices.

We attended the Tubes concert and much of it was in English and of songs and artists of our times. We were content to hear only French but truly enjoyed the atmosphere and the show.
