This small hotel oozes rustic traditional charm.

The upsides:
The setting is breathtaking (literally) having white horses right there while you lay by the exquisite pool is a dreamy setting. The wine is utter perfection. The pool lunch restaurant is lovely, by the pool and tasty homemade daytime food.

There is nothing to do, so prepare for a total unwind. Gentle walks and a leisurely bike ride is about that there is. My 7 and 10yr old had a super horse ride excursion at their stables near by.

The downsides:
The restaurant is very limited. i.e only 1 food choice and if you don't like it then its a half hour drive to Les Arles.
The mosquitos are rife, we had 30 bites in one day between four of us, take the best precautions you can.
You have to have a car.

I would go back for 2 nights, maybe 3 but with no kids.

Room Tip: Its French charm, not luxury decor, but all rooms are quaint and pretty.

Mas de Peint has everything: beautiful pool, gorgeous grounds, lovely and large rooms, delicious kitchen for breakfast, lunch and dinner, close proximity to one of the world's best restaurants (La chassagnette) as well as not far from Arles' offerings (LUMA foundation, Vincent Van Gogh Foundation to name two I visited), lovely hosts and best of all: horses. Besides the lodgings, there is the farm with Camargue ponies and cows and bulls—Frédéric and some hands and friends took me to cut cattle one morning, as a prized bull was meant to race that afternoon. On another ride we surveyed the farm's bounty: rice fields, wild blackberries, marshland, summer grasses, salt lands and more. What a special place. I can't wait to return.

Room Tip: You really can't go wrong, though I'd recommend requesting a room that overlooks the courtyard.

my girlfriend and i booked a 4 night stay at this hotel, and given the 5 star rating had suitably high expectations of what that would bring for our stay. sadly the realities of what we got fell way way short of that. so positives first - on arrival the property and the grounds are unquestionably very beautiful and the pool was nice, our room was nice and clean, and the chamber maids kept it to a high standard. that about covers the positives, and for a 5 star hotel that simply is not good enough. the 'shower' in our room was basically un-usable. it was a roll top bath, with a shower curtain that did not fit, so besides the fact it was uncomfortable to shower or stand up (my girlfriend described it as like trying to surf) every time we did shower it basically flooded the room, it wasn't designed for showering, the wifi did not work....anywhere. our phone didn't work. when i informed desk staff about this their reaction was 'oh...ok'. the breakfast was a joke. 22euros for cornflakes, some bread and jam and what tasted to me like instant coffee....we weren't offered anything other than this. then comes dinner....the hotel is SO remote, you're options are eat at the hotel or drive 30mins to the nearest town. the first night we ate at the hotel, the food was fine...not amazing, not terrible, but for that we had to pay 60 euros a head. i never write reviews online, but we were so let down by our stay at this hotel. none of the things mentioned above would have been a major issue IF we were paying 3 star hotel prices, but we weren't, we were paying 5 star and thats how the hotel is billed. if you are going to spend this amount of money on 5 star hotel DO NOT pick this one. it won't meet your expectations.

MasdePeint, Propriétaire at Hotel Le Mas de Peint, responded to this reviewResponded 4 August 2017

Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd,

It’s every time difficult for me to read a negative feedback about an experience at le Mas de Peint. I’m sorry that you haven’t seen all the differences that make our place an unusual « 5 star » hotel and not a standard one.

In fact we receive our guests in a more than 400 years old building restored by my parents in the idea to give the best accomodations keeping the architecture and the lifestyle of our region, the typical bathroom and shower are an example.

On the other hand I regret and understand the trouble you met with the phone that we’ve tried to repare as quick as possible and the WIFI. Actually in the Camargue the WIFI is a big problem and we’re working to find a solution for a better speed.

Concerning food, our set menu is exclusively made of fresh products from our farm or local growers reflecting our convictions and the way we want our place to be : simple and fresh.

Sorry for the breakfast, but for 12 € you get your continental breakfast served in your room with « only » bread, homemade jam, a fruit juice as well as coffe or tea.

In our restaurant and on our hotel terrace the main buffet proposes for 22 € a large choice of fresh salted and sweet products from our region including eggs from our farm.

In conclusion, the Mas de Peint is first of all a family farm since 1920 and became a hotel in 1994 where all traditional activities, farming rice, breading bulls and horses are still alive.

And I can assure you that it didn’t make us rich.

Your sincerely,

Frédéric Bon

We wanted 4 nights of luxury for a short stay in this undiscovered area.
We were not disappointed.
Lovely atmosphere
Lovely staff
Lovely food ( yes the menu is "fixed" but....wow.... every mouthful is heaven)
Space to be alone but never far from assistance if needed.
This hotel is on a working farm estate "mas" with rice fields all around. The only cautionary point to mention is you MUST remember to bring a good insect repellant as in the evenings the mosquitoes come out. Although on the plus side, the evening chorus of frogs and cicadas makes it worth the effort to go outside.
Owner makes an effort to talk to guests and is keen to let you know all about the area and traditions.
The hotel is a fair distance from civilisation "as we know it" so be prepared to drive if you want to eat in alternative places in the evening.
Nicely located to the less busy East side of the main national park, this hotel is perfectly placed for excursions to the reserve.
Would definitely come again.

Room Tip: North side seems nice and cool
