“Ancient Gaulish village”

Oppidum d'Entremont
Reviewed 25 May 2017

If you're interested in seeing the remnants of a 2200 year old Gaulish village on the edge of Aix-en-Provence, this is an interesting place to see.
It is best to call ahead before you go because the hours are not guaranteed. I went during scheduled hours and it was closed the first time I went.
It's also easy to take the bus - number 11 will take you to the bus stop Entremont.
It is a no frills place to visit. You park, you enter and walk around. No tickets, signs loosely placed to sort of direct you. It was helpful that they had a sign with the history of the place in multiple languages.

Call first, or have the Tourist Info people check first. While the site might be very interesting, it's a long uphill walk to get turned away. The number 7 (stop:Brunet) and 5 (stop:Ontano) take you within a ten minute walk.

Amazing to think of what life was like as I walked the grounds with some bread, cheese and wine. Stop by the Cezanne museum on the way up or down and also visit the park from where Cezanne painted Mont Sainte-Victoire.

Fort Oppidum, which is the Celtic-Roman fort that led to the founding of Aix, is up on a hill ca.1.5miles from the center. Not many descriptions, but the half-excavated remains of the majestic walls, the foundations of the houses, and the spectacular location with great views of Mont St. Victoire make it a nice 2 hr trip (free entry). If you're good on foot, you can even hike up there: pass the Atelier Cezanne and later turn left to the Chemin de la Marguerite (45 min up the hills).
