“We left early”
Reviewed 24 November 2011 for a stay in May 2011

My husband and I were wrapping up our third week in France, which had been so lovely until we got to the cottage. It felt like no one had been to the house in years. There were spider webs and spiders everywhere! There were ants in the master bedroom's bathroom windowsill. The owner so kindly left bug spray in multiple areas throughout the house. The smell in the bedroom was so terrible. It smelled like urine. My husband and I usually just want a place to lay our heads at night that is clean, but I could not bare to lay my head there another night so after we woke up to a spider on the wall the size of tarantula, we left two days early. The place does have a nice quiet location with potential, but it needs help. We appreciate clean hotels/vacation rentals on a whole other level now. They should really call this place Charlotte's web.

Thank you for your review. I had understood that you and your husband had left early to be closer to the airport, (see attached email). The majority of guest reviews, both before and following your stay are in the majority extremely positive. The cottage has been let continuously from mid-April and is thoroughly cleaned between guests. I will look into the suitability of the new sea-grass flooring on the first floor as you are now the second guest to have mentioned this. It would have been constructive to have discussed your concerns prior to your departure. We are going to leave this afternoon from the cottage. Should we just leave the keys under the same pot? Thanks, R K

“Well worth the price”
Reviewed 12 September 2011 for a stay in September 2011

Myself and my wife stayed here the last week in August / first week in September 2011. The house is around a 3 to 4 hour drive from the ferry port at Cherbourg. The Sat Nav co-ordiantes given when booking were spot on. Even without them the house is easy to locate.

The owner came by on our first evening to touch base and make sure that we had found the place. He told us that if we had any problems during our stay to give him a shout. We only had one small problem with the Wi -Fi and that was sorted out very quickly and without any hassle. We found the owner to be very approachable and helpful.

The house looked exactly like it did on the photos on the booking site, although the garden was a little untidy, which didn't bother us at all. The owner actually apologised for this when we first met him, which was due to water shortages.

The house is suitable for couples, without or without one or two youngish children. The bedrooms interconnect with the small en suite (toilet and sink) being in the first bedroom at the top of the stairs. As stated in other reviews there are steps down to the entrance door and up again to the bedrooms. The bedrooms are on the same level as the road, and the living quarters below the road. However the kithchen is dual aspect and not dark.

THe house was clean on arrival and we cannot fault the equipment left there. It was more than you would expect given the price bracket for the rental. The furniture was comfortable. SKY was available and we did use it although in some repects I wish it wasn't as it would add more to the getting away from it all feeling!! ( the owner can't win on this one really).

On the downside, the grass type carpet upstairs which is mentioned in another review is not at all confortable to walk on in bare feet and the en-suite door could be a lot better. Also, the bed was too small for me to fit in comfortably, but i am 6 foot 5 in., so probably it wouldn't be an issue for the majority.

St Clement is very quiet and the better of the boulangeries was closed the week we were there. There is real peace and quiet there. The relais near the house is fine for a quick bite to eat. However, Les Rosiers which is about 3 KM away has a couple of decent bars and one very decent restaurant, La Toque Blanche. It also a great traiteur and boulangerie. There are loads of cycle routes in the area. The countryside is very flat so you can do a good distance without too much effort. If renting a bike, do so in Les Rosiers, not in St Martin, another village nearby. The bikes are better in Les Rosiers and they are €8 per day as opposed to €15 in St Martin!!

Saumur is a nice town. Angers is nicer still. I won't refer to these here as there is enough written about them elsewhere. THe villages on the far side of the river are really nice and worth a cycle / drive by.

Overall, the house is certainly worth the money and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

Thank you for your comments following your stay at the cottage. I thought it would be worth clarifying the bed sizes for future guests. Both bedrooms have sprung mattresses. The bed that was made up during your stay, (STANDARD DOUBLE, 54 x 75 inches (137 x 190 cm)) was the smaller of the two as it is in the bedroom with the en-suite. The bed in the second room is larger, (KING SIZE, 76 x 80 inches (198 x 203 cm)). The bed linen provided fit both beds, so feel free to change bedrooms if you are more comfortable.
