Owner description: The apparent austerity of this shale and limestone fortress, which the young king Louis IX had built on the edge of his kingdom in the 13th century, contrasts with the tranquil grounds inside the castle walls and the pleasant residence of the Dukes of Anjou, composed of buildings constructed at the end of the Gothic era. To transform and embellish the castle into a more welcoming home for the Anjou court, terraces and gardens were laid out, galleries built and the gateway erected. The star attraction within the walls of the Château d’Angers is the Tapestry of the Apocalypse or woven in 1375. With its 104 metres in length, it is the largest medieval tapestry anywhere in the world. Open:> 2nd May to 4th September: from 9.30 a.m. to 6.30 p.m.> 5th September to 30th April: from 10 a.m. to 5.30 p.m. Last admission 45 minutes before closing time. Closed:> 1st January, 1st May, 1st November, 11th November and 25th December.

We had two hours available before catching a train in Angers, and decided to visit the chateau. What a surprisingly amazing place! We expected to spend an hour and found that it really was worth more than two hours for the visit. The fortress appearance on the outside belies a beautiful garden and buildings on the inside. And most amazing is a breathtaking and enormous tapestry from the 13th century that takes up an entire museum inside the castle. Definitely worth the stop to visit this chateau.

The castle at Angers is a really cool fortified castle. The outer walls and towers are substantial and make for an awesome walk on the ramparts. The English audio guide is interesting and very informative. The Apocalypse Tapestry is also incredible and there is a lot of information on it in the audio guide. The audio guide goes through each individual section of the tapestry. The gardens inside the dry moat and in the castle are pretty nice too. You will get a lot of great photos here and anyone interested in seeing a cool castle will thoroughly enjoy this. This castle is on my top 5 list of European castles that I have seen and I have been all over Europe. Don't miss the castle or the tapestry.

Lovely way to spend half a day in Angers. Lots to see. Shame that the Apocalypse tapestry is so dark that it is difficult to pick out the story
Lovely restaurant providing first class lunch French style - pay your money and enjoy a selection of starters, choose a main course and take as many desserts as you would care to.
There is a lovely gotto train to give you a flavour of the town .

Enjoyed our visit, hope you do too.

The Castle of Angers is cool, but within the walls is the Tapestry of the Apocolypse which is an incredible medieval wonder--much better than expected. Do a little research first to truly appreciate it!

Viewing the tapestries is not to be missed, but do get the excellent audio guide.

We primarily visited the castle to see the Apocalypse Tapestry, which is stunning and rather larger that I had imagined. It is also in extremely good condition. Guided tours are available, but we chose the audio guide, which described each tapestry panel in turn, so the viewing took over an hour. Without the audio guide, I would have been unable to follow the story and would have missed so much detail

We did not explore the rest of the castle too much because we ran out of time viewing the tapestry, but it does look quite interesting

This was a highlight of our visit to the Loire
