The odd thing about going away in the UK is, that half the time it’s quicker, easier, and cheaper just to jump in your car and drive into the EU instead. So it was that in less time that it would have taken me to drive to Devon for a weekend, I went to Lille instead. The Clarance has that thing that so many hotels lack, personality. It’s a beautiful old building, and it’s conversion to a hotel has retained its character. High ceilings, huge bed, lovely bathroom, and many other details remind you this isn’t a run of the mill prefabricated box hotel. Every room is unique... Reception was by a friendly chap who insisted on re-parking my car so it was ‘just-so’. The cars arranged in front of the building like they were on a magazine shoot. It’s a small touch, but most hotel car parking arrangements leave much to be desired, and for me the standard of the car park is way above the provision of free WIFI.
The staff were polite throughout my stay, and even let me leave my car there for several hours after I’d checked out, so I could do some last minute shopping. More
