Hotel-Restaurant l’Esquielle was a delightful find in the area around Nimes in southern France. Wanting to avoid the noise and busyness of a larger city and still wanting a town accessible by train, I chose this hotel in the town of Saint-Genies-de-Malgoires to spend an evening before heading north through the picturesque Cevennes countryside.

The hotel occupies a very old structure in a town that is so typical of the Midi. The heavy stone work and arcades keep things cool on hot days. I particularly appreciated the friendly welcome by the staff. When I was shown to my air conditioned room, it was a treat on a hot day. The room was small but adequate with a nicely updated bathroom. I had a little view of a small terrace with flowers, but most other rooms overlook the larger tree-lined back property or a larger terrace with tables and chairs.

A special highlight of this hotel is the large swimming pool and the relaxing grounds surrounding it. It was an easy place to enjoy as evening drew on and I asked to drink a pastis in the warm, pine-scented air.

It was dinner, however, that was exceptional. As is typical in France, this hotel employs young adults who are learning the profession to assist the hotel staff in serving the dinner. I can tell you everything was correctly served! Since the weather was very warm, the same outdoor tables at which I had my little drink were transformed with tablecloths and proper settings for the evening meal. For the four-course meal I chose a salad with garlic and anchovies, a fricassee of guinea fowl with mushrooms, a cheese course and a chestnut flan. The bread was superb, of course, and I enjoyed a very good local red wine. Although I was dining alone, the meal lasted two hours and I was totally relaxed.

In the morning, since I had to catch a train earlier than the normal breakfast hours, the hotel staff prepared something nice for me to eat before I left. I certainly hope to visit this hotel and nice town again.

Room Tip: Some rooms open on to a small terrace.

This is really a nice hotel, clean and quite charming, but when I made the reservation I was convinced it was in Nimes, as shown on the map. Wrong! It's 20km outside town. We arrived rather late and at one point we were sure we were heading for the middle of nowhere on an unpaved road in the fields! However, the staff was kind enough to wait for us and invited us to spend the evening on the terrace on the 1st floor. There's a private parking space as well.
