Located right next to the Canal St Martin, surrounded by lovely bars and restaurants and only a 15 minute walk from Gare du Nord, Le Citizen is a small hotel perfectly located as a base for a weekend in Paris. Starting with the "positives" - firstly, the staff could not have been more helpful, kind and friendly; secondly, breakfast (included in the room price) was delicious with fresh croissants and real freshly squeezed orange juice, a gorgeous smoothie plus cold meats and cheese all washed down with fresh coffee and, thirdly, the rooms (accessed via a lift to all 6 floors) all benefit from lovely views over the canal and, finally, the breakfast room/bar/lounge area has a really good selection of guide books and local restaurant recommendations in English. Moving on to the "averages" - the rooms (we had a standard room #5) are perfectly adequate and well appointed if very small - comfortable bed but don't expect for two of you to be able to move around the room at the same time! Bathroom (shower, basin and toilet) and amenities are just what you would expect (but again small) and there are coffee/tea making facilities as well. Wardrobe/drawer space is just fine for a weekend but if you are staying for longer you will probably be living out of a suitcase or asking for a larger room. And so to the "not so good" - the air conditioning didn't seem able to cope with the temperatures in Paris in August so the room was hot, especially at night...which meant that we had to sleep with at least one window open...and the area around Canal St Martin was very, very noisy late into the night/early morning made worse by the frequent sounds of emergency vehicle sirens to wake you after the noise from the partying finally subsides around 3.30am! So, in summary, a great location (at least in the day time) with great staff let down by the noise around (of course, outside of the hotel's control) made worse by the sub-optimal aircon system. A "definite maybe" when we come back to Paris again.

Room Tip: Go high up and make sure the aircon works

I will definitely be staying at this hotel again when in Paris. The location is perfect - right on Canal St Martin which has lots of surrounding bars and restaurants. The hotel is modern and clean and staff were helpful. I'd probably try and book the Suite rather than the standard room next time as the bed was only a double (too small for myself and husband) - there is a king in the Suite - however it was comfortable. We were also given an ipad for use which was a nice touch along with the biscuits we'd get each time we arrived home in the afternoon.

Room Tip: Choose the larger suite for a King bed, bigger bathroom and overall space if you want it.

I had a wonderful time at Le Citizen. The room overlooked the St. Martin canal, a fun area off the typical tourist path, but close to Gare du Nord, with people young and old enjoying picnics and sedate parties sitting on the wall of the canal. No worries about noise though - the modern double pane windows kept the noise out.
The hotel room is modern in its fixtures, is very clean, and had a large comfortable bed. It was even air conditioned. And whoever made the omelettes for breakfast, thank you, you did an excellent job. Of course the room was small, this being Paris, but it had everything I needed.
But the real special gem here is the extremely nice, helpful and interesting staff. I had several interesting conversations with members of the staff, about art, music, boston and politics.

We stayed in a Citizen Suite for one night during the Euro Cup. Online booking, check-in and check-out were smooth. Friendly, always available staff. Buffet breakfast including a great selection and could be eaten in the restaurant or in your room. Reliable WiFi. Free minibar. Two bathrooms. Everyone was happy!

Lots of great cafes, restaurants, and shops nearby. Our favourites included Ten Belles (for coffee) and Du Pain des et Idees (bakery across the canal). If you're there on a Tuesday or Friday morning, get up early and visit the Marche Popincourt.

Reception staff was extremely helpful, attentive and kind. Room was comfortable and clean. Area was a great alternative to busier locales - cool and great restaurants just round the corner, hip shops, very pleasant stroll along the canal Saint Martin.
