We walked up to the church vs. taking the funicular. You should too. Take it slow and enjoy the view on the way up. Your reward is taking a break on the stairs and listening to a street performer. The church itself is pretty, but it's really the outside that's worth seeing. There will likely be a line, but it'll move fast so don't be scared off.

The funicular to the Basilica is a must, the stairs is a must, the interior is just breath-taking and the history will seep into your bones

The view is very nice from the church, the environment, the stairs are original and welcoming. One little note, Eiffel tower can not be seen from here.
The church has a very strange architecture, a great mix of various styles, difficult to like.

This is unique. You haven’t seen such an architecture. Try to go there in the afternoon and stay till night. And expect a lot of stairs

Located in Montmartre, this beautiful church and surrounding area is worth the steep climb to reach it. (And don't worry, if you can't make the climb, there's a cute little train to transport you). Enjoy the sights...you can see the whole city from this high elevation! People congregate on the steps and it's always lively. If you get there early in the morning you'll be pleasantly surprised by the quiet serenity of the area. However, be very aware, this is one of the biggest areas for what I refer to as "the hustlers". They lie in wait at the bottom of the steps up to the basilica. Keep your hands in your pockets and your eyes straight ahead. Otherwise you open yourself up to a bracelet being slipped on your wrist followed by a demand for money. It really isn't too bad to navigate and it is worth it!
