“Third stay - still liking it !”
Reviewed 15 March 2012

I have never stayed in any hotel three times but this was my third visit to Mama Shelter. I really like it . The rooms are very hip but also functional and above all very clean. We always go for the luxe room which is slightly bigger. This hotel is in an up and coming non touristy area but after a days shopping and sightseeing in central Paris - you can go down to the bar or restaurant which is full of the Parisian in crowd and feel that you are in a happening place. Staff are helpful and the demographic that stays here is always trendy. The breakfast is good and the ambience is relaxed. There is a nice atmosphere in this hotel that I havent found in other Paris hotels.

The last time I stayed at the mama was in Summer 2011 and will go again in summer 2012. In total I have spent already a couple stays there.

The Mama Shelter was built I guess in 2008 or so and is kind of a brand new hotel in Paris. It is kind of a budget design hotel. You can have a room for something like 80 EUR per night, which is something like a little miracle in Paris. Normally 80 EUR leads you to a hostel, old crapy place or to the brunch buffet at one of the Grand Hotels in Paris.

The look of the hotel is very fresh and perfectly hit my taste. The rooms are a bit cosy but pretty standard suze for Paris. All rooms are equipped with an iMac, which is also the TV or radio station or in room "photo camera" (you can shoot pic's and upload them into the public photo album so evrybody is able to see it). The lamps beside you bed are actually masks of comic hero's like batman etc which you can actually wear. This is one of the popular motives with in the public album - guest with these masks covering their faces... and sometime without cloth :). Only thing that could be improved are the bathrooms, they are missing a bit the freshness and details of the bedroom.

The Restaurant and the Bar are the absolute Highlights. They are designed by Philip Starck and are one of the coolest Places in Town. Its hard to descriebe it briefly, you just have to check out the pictures. The whole section is divided into three to four parts. Pizza bistro, restaurant, Bar and further restaurant or in the morning breakfast area. It is very busy nearly every day of the week. A lot french people visit the place which maes it even better as it is not a pure tourist spot. The quality of the food is pretty descent but nothing spectacular, it's a mixture of french and internationl cuisine. So you shouldn't expect a 3 star dish or cosy french dish and you wont be dissapointed.

The Service in general is also ok. I have no bad experience nor something exceptionally positive.

Locationwise the hotel might seem to be a bitt off the main road which it actually is to a certain extent. Located at the 20est arondissment it is close to the east border of paris (the peripherique) and therefore well connected to the airport CDG. The next Metro is Gambetta and located a 5-10 minute walk. Genrally speaking within 20 minutes you can be in central Paris nonetheless whether you choose to take a cab or the metro. The area itself is not overwhelming but is an emerging spot for you people. You will maybe find a couple nice shops, bars, restaurants etc but not too much.

Summarizing the long stroy... 80 for such a Hotel ist really good. Would love to have more places like that in more towns. It's a well done product!

this is an unusual hotel that I visited whilst on business. It has a great deal going for it, particularly a lively restaurant / bar area that had a great atmosphere. If passing I would definitely call in again for a quick drink and pizza. However there were a number of real lapses in service and attention which mean I wouldn't recommend it (unless you really want to take photos of yourself in your bedroom wearing hotel masks on an iMac computer!!!).
The service throughout the hotel was atrocious, only once did I feel that I was the customer and the staff in the hotel were there to serve me, the rest of the time there was a level of ignorance which was shocking - reception abruptness, bar staff ignoring non locals, locking the main entrance and sending you to a 'side' door. However worse than all of this was the housekeeping staff who on my first day I observed them store all the laundry trollies and used room service trays in the fire exit - I did mention this and it wasn't repeated whilst I was there but given the context above around service typifies the attitude of the staff.

Room Tip: take a torch

We stayed for 3 nights at Mama Shelter and really enjoyed our stay.
The hotel is not centrally located but there are a number of Metro Stations within 10 minutes walk that will get you into central Paris quickly. We arrived fairly late on a Friday to find a very lively atmosphere with both the hotel Pizzeria and Restaurant very busy. We managed to eventually get a seat at the 'communal' table in the pizzeria and enjoyed a pleasant if not remarkable pizza. An inquiry at the restaurant in regard to table for the following night was met with a "fully booked", so it may be worth booking ahead of your arrival if you want to eat there at the weekend. We did get a table on the Sunday and enjoyed our meal and found the service from the waiter to be very good. All the staff throughout the hotel, (who were probably recruited on the basis of their looks!) were extremely helpful and couldn't be faulted. We ate breakfast in the hotel 2 mornings (15 euros each) and again found it an enjoyable experience.
For a local restaurant recommendation, we found L'Ange Gardien to be an excellent little bistro and only about 5 minutes walk from Mama Shelter

Stayed here during a weekday, so you might expect a more business oriented audience, which was the case @ dinner and @ breakfast. As the website provides plenty of pics there was no surprise, the rooms come as they come, not big (as usual in Paris) but far more practical and original than most hotels in this price range. The bathroom is without any pretention, just functional but misses a bit of 'character'. The Imac in every room has cool features (cityguide, what to do, where to eat, ...), webcam sharing between the rooms (hm hm) and (Free!) video on demand (request a keyboard at the reception if you plan to surf the web). Handy for those without plans to visit the city of Paris. Breakfast was 15 eu and worth it (although all clients were moved to one shared table after 10.30am). Resto and bar area are cosy and well designed. Rooms and bathrooms were tidy. Do know the street is a busy street which involves a bit of traffic noise at morning hours and metro station is a 10 min walk away. would recommend the place if you have been several times to Paris and don't need to be centrally located.
