The location was breathtaking. A 800 years old chateau, history all over the place. The owner is very helpful and trustworthy, the perfect host. The rooms are spacious and well equiped, plus the beds are perfect. Slept so well every night. Very peaceful right outside the centre of Chinon. Where you, by the way, have a lot of fine restaurants and shops. It would be a pleasure to come back to Chateau de la Vauguyon.
We were warmly greeted by the owner, who clearly takes pride in looking after his visitors. The accommodation was comfortable with a well equipped kitchen and all the amenities needed. The location is superb, within 5 minutes drive of a supermarket and not much further into Chinon. We also enjoyed exploring the local area on foot. The only issue was that the weather was not brilliant for August and so we were not able to sit out as much as we would have liked to read and eat - but that's hardly the owner's fault! A lovely stay and we enjoyed checking on the local frog as we came through the gate! Thank you very much, Monsieur Duthu!
The chateau is historically interesting but very comfortable and has plenty of seating outside where you can enjoy a bbq on a beautiful evening, listening to the local frogs and watching eagles or hot air balloons flying overhead, Celian our host was fabulously welcoming and very good at suggesting places to visit in the area. The chateau is within walking distance of Chinon so you can all go out for dinner and enjoy a glass or two of the local (very good) wines and no-one has to be 'the driver'. There is a SuperU supermarket en route to the town where just about anything you want is available - easy parking too. There are lots of chateaux to visit in the area and a day out in Saumur is highly recommended .... you have to taste the fouees with rillettes for a delicious snack. We'll be returning.
Both gites are well appointed. The smaller of the two has its own secluded and fenced in rear garden whilst the larger one has easy access to a large walled front garden - much enjoyed by our two boxers Max and Archie!
Both gites have great views of Chinon, are roomy inside and well appointed. The town centre is an easy five minute journey by car and SuperU and a very good boulangerie are within walking distance.
Celian, the owner, speaks good english and is a great host - always happy to give you advice on the local area.
We have been every year since 2008 and La Vauguyon is the best french gite we have stayed in to date. Go and enjoy it!
