We took my mother for afternoon tea at the Midland on Tuesday 28th August to celebrate her 89th birthday . Afternoon tea is one of our favourite treats and we had high expectations, having read various reviews. We have been fortunate to enjoy afternoon tea at the Ritz, the Savoy and on the Queen Mary and can safely say that the quality of the experience provided by the Midland was comparable and even exceeded in some respects.
The Octagon lounge is gorgeous- beautiful marble and tesserae flooring. The tables are the right size and height and the upholstered chairs are much comfier than the usual formal dining chairs. This all adds to the enjoyment. The sandwiches were inventive and utterly delicious. Exceptional in fact. The scones were fresh and fluffy, and serving a compote of summer fruit was a lovely touch as I find jam too sweet and the compote was a delicious alternative. The cakes- well they were super. We could not eat all of them and doggy bags were provided - they even went so far as to give us a fresh slice of carrot cake because the frosting had slumped a little- this was really above and beyond!
Service was unobtrusive yet attentive. Nothing was too much trouble. A lovely time was had by all (and we think we'll book this for the whole family for mother's 90th birthday next year)More
