Although relatively expensive, the food represents reasonable value for money. A really good quality steak, cooked to perfection can’t be argued with. Excellent service too. I must be getting old though cos the music (volume particularly) irked a little.

We went here two nights ago for a meal before a show. We both had a rump steak which came with chips and a little garlic butter over the steak. I had blue cheese sauce with mine. The steak was cooked to perfection and my blue cheese sauce was so tasty. Can highly recommend this restaurant and we will certainly go back next time we are in Manchester.

A branch of a celebrated Glasgow restaurant.
Tucked away round the corner of Manchester's posh food court The Corn Exchange, it's opposite the back of Manchester Cathedral,
Descend down into the bowels of the Corn exchange into Alston Bar & Beef's bright, welcoming dining area
Very welcoming unhurried staff
Good but pricey wine list with glass, carafe or bottle options
Emphasis on Gins, bar created cold infusion gin flavours, over 70 artisan gins, gin cocktails and a 'secret' gin bar to tempt you after eating
Attention to detail is good, with their huge range of grass fed, 35 day aged, Scottish Tweed Valley sourced steaks
Other options available such as chicken, pork or fish
We ate D-rump steak and Pan fried Bream - both perfectly cooked
Excellent - though limited desserts, not too big not too small!
Very good Lunch/Early evening deals Mon -Thurs 12 -6pm & Fri - Sat 12-4pm
This is on track to become a Manchester favourite!

I visited Alston Bar & Beef with my partner after reading such good reviews on here. We were a little late to the booking and called in advance to let them know we'd be 10 minutes late - no problem! We were taken down to the bar area downstairs, which has a really nice atmosphere. We ordered a bottle of red wine to share - the drinks menu was very good and had many choices.

We were taken upstairs to the restaurant, which is roomy and has a nice ambience. We were sat in the corner (which we had requested as our preferred seating area) and the waitress was really down-to-earth and chatty, not in an overly informal way, but you could tell her recommendations were truthful. She was friendly and helpful.

We shared the Assiette of steak, which was good and cooked well. I had chips, my partner had mash. I had an extra side of mac and cheese, which was unfortunately disappointing - I love truffle, and I love mac and cheese - but the truffle I could barely taste and there wasn't much cheese to it either. Shame.

We shared the brownie for dessert - this was tasty.

Overall, I would come back. It is a nice place. Does it deserve a top spot on Tripadvisor? I'm not sure. I have had better steak in Manchester. Nevertheless, the service was great, the ambience was nice, and the food wasn't at all bad.

Thanks for taking the time to review us! Great to hear that your booking and pre-dinner drink with us was an easy & enjoyable experience! And that you enjoyed our relaxed yet professional service style, this is definitely something we pride ourselves on and a factor that we think has made us so popular. I am not sure if you gave feedback on the Mac & Cheese to your server or not but I have given this information our Head Chef & kitchen team for review.

We are very proud of our TripAdvisor ranking and like to think we deserve a high-ranking based on the % of great reviews, not sure why this would be questioned based on your review but each to their own! Thanks again, Riki

After a fantastic first visit in the New Year we decided to return with our daughter and her partner, the previous lunch we sampled was superb.

We dined on Easter Sunday lunch and the restaurant was relatively quiet but got busier later in the day. We had talked about the noodles with steak since our original visit so we decided to share these again as a starter and they were equally as good.

The noodles have quite a kick to them and the steak literally cut like butter, obviously no skimping on quality ingredients here. If you are a steak lover (which I am not overly fussed for to be honest) you will be in your element and certainly save some money over Gaucho or Bar and Grill etc.

Our companions shared the Octopus and Chorizo starter and a portion of the stuffed peppers. Unfortunately we cannot comment on how good these were because they were demolished as quickly as our noodles and steak!!

The beauty of Alston is on a Sunday you can opt for the a la carte or go for a Sunday lunch, our daughter and partner both had the Chicken lunch and we had the Pork chop on beans and the fillet steak, there was literally nothing left on our plates.

The price for four of us with a couple of spirits and a cracking top end Syrah and a carafe of Rioja was very reasonable no complaints.

We are returning to Manchester in April for a longer stay and Alston is the first restaurant on the list we cannot wait to return.
