We spent a couple of days at Bartle Hall for a 'get-away-from-it-all' break over Valentine's day. We were well looked after from the moment we checked in - simple things like being taken to our room rather than just directed to it, and fresh milk brought to our door so that we could have a proper brew in the room instead of having to use the UHT cartons. It's the little touches that make the difference between good service and excellent service.
The room was not cavernous, but was spacious enough and well maintained (ours had a lovely view across the front lawn). My only criticism would be that, although there was enough space for a 5' king-size bed in the room, we only had a standard 4'6" bed - I suspect that many people, like us, are now used to having larger beds at home and really miss the small amount of extra width when it's not there. It's surprising what a difference 6 inches can make ;-). An extra pillow each wouldn't have gone amiss, and perhaps the mattress was a little on the hard side of perfectly comfortable - but these are really just very minor niggles and shouldn't put you off in any way if you're thinking of staying here.
Breakfast on both mornings was really nice - a great choice of really tasty cooked food, freshly prepared to order, with a good selection of juices, cereals, fruit, etc. and service which was attentive without being intrusive. Perfect.
The highlight for us, though, was dinner on the first night. I don't think I'd be exaggerating if I were to say that it's the best meal that either of us have eaten in a long time. The menu featured plenty of variety without the choices being overwhelming, service was again spot-on (not too much, not too little), and the food was absolutely amazing - my Garstang blue on toast, with grated pear and caramel-coated walnuts was a particular highlight, although the anise-spiced belly pork gave it a good run for its money!
We'll definitely be going back back here again in the future.
