“Just wonderful - in every way!”

We've stayed in some cottages in our times, many have been superb but this one shot right to the top of the list for comfort, presentation, location and a myriad of personal touches. Clearly a labour of love, every detail of this wonderful house had been carefully thought through (often, labelled with notes attached by ribbon!) and Hillary, the owner, was a joy to communicate with for at least a week before we went, coming up with suggestions to meet our vegetarian, dog-accompanying and sight-seeing needs - yes, we were able to take our large dog with us too.

Right away, the cottage felt like home-from-home and we walked right from the door through the village and along gorgeous country lanes with views of stunning hillsides the evening we arrived and, again, later that week as there are extensive routes along the canal paths taking you in both directions. Further afield, there is everything you could want to see on a trip to Wales, from small towns to romantic ruined castles, ancient sites, waterfalls, rivers, lakes, those hills...as a photographer, I was in my element and everything was within about an hours driving, even to get to the far side of the Brecon park. We really fell in love with the location and it has opened up a strong desire to explore Wales much more than we have, especially given this cottage was so was so quick and easy to reach from the end of the M4, making it much more accessible than Cornwall, Devon or the Lake District (places we have tended to beeline in the past).

The garden at the cottage was a real bonus, including all the lovely in-season veg that we were invited to help ourselves to. I love to cook on holiday - well, its easier when you're a veggie and prefer good organic ingredients - so it was just wonderful to have a proper kitchen that was well stocked with all the things you would expect at home, including plenty of cutlery and plates (having just come back from another holiday where there was just four of everything, I can tell you that Pontganol Cottage was a delight for its well-stocked cupboards). Everything was clean and in good working order, the dining table was a lovely area to eat by candlelight after our trips out, then to sink into one of those comfortable sofas or maybe a roll-top bath...We were also able to get Waitrose to deliver food, which we organised before we left home so that we got all of our favourite ingredients delivered an hour after we arrived, with plenty of room in the large fridge freezer to store it. Honestly, we could have stayed for another week and will certainly be back - in summary, perfect in every way; if only all rentals were like this!

Hello, and huge apologies that I'm replying to your lovely review of the cottage so embarrassingly late. I love reading the reviews that the cottage gets, but I'm always so nervous that there will have been something that lets her (or me!) down. I am so pleased that there wasn't on your stay and that you loved the cottage and her veggie garden, handwritten notes and setting. As I'm sure you know, you are more than welcome to return whenever you like. Thanks once again for such a gorgeous review.
Kind regards,
Hilary

“Wow - wish this was our home!”
Reviewed 16 August 2015 for a stay in July 2015

This is the nicest holiday cottage we have ever stayed in - it was homely, cosy and better equipped than our house! We took our 2 year old toddler and she loved the toy box and the garden - picking the last remaining peas was her favourite. The garden and the fresh produce was a lovely touch - never had that before in a holiday home. The scrummy lemon cake, chocs and fizzy that was left for us was very appreciated - and my daughter absolutely loved the "dirty" sheep bath toy!

Everything felt as though the owner really appreciated her guests - from both the personalised card through to the contact we had both before and during our stay (there was due to be water works nearby - which didn't affect us - but Hilary let us know anyway). Literally everything had been thought of - even to the point of a stairgate and the fire ready to be lit (which we really appreciated as despite it being July - it was rainy and cold - but the woodburner made the cottage very cosy).

Lots of outdoor toys were provided in the summer house and the garden was lovely to mooch around. We couldn't fault the cottage at all - absolutely loved it and would love to return!

The only thing we didn't like was the local pub (which obviously is totally out of the control of the owner of this cottage but worth mentioning - we wished we'd avoided). We went there on a Sunday lunchtime. We wish we'd read the other tripadvisor reviews and the pub's comments in response - they are clearly in denial - the food was horrible and the welcome not particularly warm. We found some lovely other places to eat - and wish we'd not wasted our money at the Red Lion. But we'll save a review of the Red Lion for another day..... Try Cwtch Café in Abergavenny - their quiches and cakes are absolutely lush!

The cottage was lovely and I would definitely recommend to everyone - we had a lovely relaxing break and it was wonderfully refreshing to deal with Hilary as nothing seemed any trouble. Thank you Hilary - we had a fab time!

Hello Tracey and thank you so much for taking the time to write the cottage (and I!) such a lovely review. I'm so sorry that it's taken me an age to reply, but I'm so pleased you, your husband and daughter all had a fabulous time there, and were able to enjoy some of the veggies from the garden too. I can only apologise about the Welsh weather meaning you needed to light the woodburner in July, but I promise the sun does come out sometimes! Please do come back and stay again - the cottage would love to see you.
Kind regards,
Hilary

“A delightful corner of the Beacons.”
Reviewed 6 August 2015 for a stay in July 2015

The cottage itself felt well situated, secure and was finished to a high standard.
It is obvious that Hilary, the owner, has thought a lot about guest comfort. There are useful notes and instructions around the house and the garden games were a nice touch.
Picking peas and strawberries in the vegetable garden was an activity for everyone. There were lots of other vegetables to be had too.
We raved about the cottage to family and friends and hope to get the chance to stay there again (flying in from Stockholm).

Hi Jonathan, and thank you so much for your lovely review of the cottage and your time there. Its always lovely to hear that the veggie garden is being used - the soil is amazing, as is my neighbour who plants and looks after it. Please do come back and stay again whenever you're over from Stockholm!
Kind regards,
Hilary

What a fantastic find this cottage was.Great garden for all to enjoy. The cottage itself is clean, bright, full of character, quirky and so homely. The locals in the village and pubs were very friendly.Personal touches upon our arrival were special and thoughtful.Hilary has done a fantastic job of providing everything one could require in a holiday cottage without Pontganol losing any of her quirkiness and character .It was a pleasure to return to our "home" each evening and sit in the garden planning the next day of adventure. We had great weather to appreciate the beauty of the Beacons and will be back.I recommend this fantastic cottage to all

“A wonderful place you want to keep a secret but can't help shouting about!”
Reviewed 25 April 2015 for a stay in April 2015

This beautiful cottage is a sparkling gem in the Brecon Beacons crown! We took our first doggy-friendly family holiday here with our 6 year old daughter and 5 month old puppy and honestly could not recommend it highly enough! The cottage is finished to the highest standard I've encountered and is a step beyond what you normally expect! You really get the feeling that the owner created this holiday cottage with a good heart - not just as a business. You will find everything you need plus a little more to have a wonderfully relaxing and restorative break away from it all. Every room is so well thought out for comfort and entertainment. We only actually ate out once - not for lack of choice in the area but because we enjoyed spending time in the cottage so much! From star-gazing long lazy baths to curling up in front of the log burner, or enjoying a BBQ in the sun, this place is full of all the simple and beautiful things in life than transform a nice holiday into an amazing one! The area is one of outstanding natural beauty - the scenery quite simply breathtaking. We took a trip to the top of Sugarloaf Mountain and enjoyed a picnic and wonderful walk (picnic hamper / flask and rug can all be found in the cottage)! and have the most wonderful photographs to cherish from the experience. We also rode the Brecon Mountain Railway line (dogs welcome there too)! and would most highly recommend that for the wonderful views, once again! A final mention must go the the locals - everyone we met was so welcoming, chatty and friendly and we've never been anywhere quite so universally friendly! Don't miss the 'Black Mountain Gold' chocolate shop in Crickhowell (just down the road), where we received a really warm welcome from the owner. And after that stroll along to 'Bookish' for some gorgeous books, cards and gifts. Obviously we can't wait to return:-))))
