“Hidden Gem Worth a Visit”
Review of Fore Abbey

Reviewed 24 August 2017

This has to be the most under-rated historical site we have visited. Fortunately, one of our cousins suggested the visit because it was close to an old family homestead, and we are so happy we visited.

The ruins of a large 1,000 year-old monastic settlement are on one side of the road, with an old church and other landmarks across the street. There are legends about the 7 Wonders of Fore, which I wish I had researched in advance. Nonetheless, it was a supremely enjoyable two hour visit.

We stopped at the small ice cream shop and the sweet lady running the place managed to get us keys to enter the ~300 year-old chapel on site.

The village is also dotted with small carved crosses and an impressive entrance gate, all hundreds of years old.

There was no cost to visit the village.

Really interesting ruins and off the beaten path, so our little group had the place entirely to ourselves. You had to walk over some bridge pathways over a boggy area to get to the main ruins – about 5 minute walk. Very nice caretakers. The cloisters is in semi-ruin, but awesome and definitely worth a visit. You can take a long walk along a trail, but we did not have time. The ancient church across the street still has modern burials at the cemetary. There is a small café and tourist centre a minute down the road.

The kids loved running around exploring the ruins and trying to find the '7 Wonders of Fore'. We had the whole place to ourselves not like other historic sites like Glendalough. There is a lovely looped walk, 3km I think. Walk takes you through the church ruins and on through different habits and other points of historical interest and back into Fore village. A great half day out.

We visited with a few families and the kids had an amazing time climbing in the Abbey. There is a lovely and well maintained Forrest walk close by with plenty of interesting things to see for kids along the way.

Decided to go to see Fore Abbey and to learn about the 7 wonders of Fore. The signage is excellent and it is easy for everyone to walk and access the abbey - we had someone on crutches. It is such a shame that people litter this national monument. The Council / OPW need to empty litter bins more often. The bin I saw was full and had been pilfered by the jackdaws!! However this monastic settlement is a hidden gem and well worth a visit.
