An Cruiscin Lan
A polished “full little jug” of Irish harmony and contentment!

We have travelled extensively in the USA for our work as musicians, and are starting to roam Europe more often. Thus, we have stayed in many hotels, BnBs, and the like.

Although I often write positive reviews about good places we stay or visit, I seldom “rave.” This review will be an exception. We will rave about the folks and experience of An Cruiscin Lan for some time to come.

We chose this BnB long distance for our first trip to Sligo mostly because of the ratings here on TripAdvisor, but also because we perform the song “An Cruiscin Lan” in some of our programs and got a kick out of staying in a place with that name.

This little gem of a BnB is nestled on a nondescript little street close to downtown Sligo, about a 15-minute walk from the bus and train station. You stand in front of the cool-looking old-fashioned sign floating over what seems to be at first glance an unprepossessing little establishment. But you’ll be feeling very happy after you meet the owners, Geraldine & Liam McGettigan (and Noel, too)!…and just wait until you get to your room. (PS Call or email them ahead to let them know your arrival time.)

Our room was at the front of the house, third floor (which mitigated the traffic noise which inevitably arose—after all, it’s a city). The room was absolutely charming. It was well-appointed (even a dressing table with a mirror!) tastefully decorated in soft Victorian rose colors, and most important of all, spotlessly clean.

And I mean SPOTLESS.

We are of course huge Yeats fans, and we were enchanted to see a framed decorative Yeats quote over the bed. Amenities abounded, including all those special Irish touches that make you feel right at home (Kettle, biscuits, coffee and tea, even some juice).

The breakfasts prepared by Liam (a talented gentleman indeed) were simply the best we’ve had in any BnB in Ireland. Choices abounded and they were thoughtfully assembled—and you could assemble your own breakfast, no problem. Lots of fresh fruit, so welcome to see!

Geraldine’s elegant yet openly friendly and totally attentive presence in the morning made waking up a pleasure. (We also met another member of the family, Noel, who is equally friendly and helpful, a real sweetie).

As you can tell, we loved everything about our accommodation.

But it’s meeting the people that make staying in BnBs attractive, and I cannot praise Liam and Geraldine enough. Although most BnB hosts are helpful and attentive, these two are something quite special. They are totally professional in a warm, truly authentic way.

They went out of their way to help us arrange a Yeats-related cruise even when the cruise directors seemed to have dropped the ball on their end. Over the two days we stayed, countless other kindnesses accrued.

Yet even more important than the professional aspects of our interactions, Liam and Geraldine are interesting, intelligent folks in their own right, with roots sunk deep in their town and area. They are the kind of folks I’d invite over to my own house for a meal or a drink of an evening. This attests more than anything else to how truly and genuinely lovely these folks are.

We will make this our Sligo “home base” in the future. I could go on of course…but here’s the final cadence:

Stay there. Be there. Liam’s and Geraldine’s An Cruiscin Lan in Sligo is a melodious Irish experience through and through.

Room Tip: Our room was at the front of the house, third floor (which mitigated the traffic noise which inevitably arose—after all, it’s a city).

The McGettigans run a wonderful B&B. The B&B itself is clean and comfortable, with a spacious breakfast room in which they serve an excellent breakfast with lots of appealing options. We stayed in the apartment; the refrigerator was kept stocked with milk and fruit juice and there was cereal, fresh fruit, tea and instant coffee in constant supply. When we needed to find a reliable cab, the McGettigans steered us right. The entire staff is friendly and very helpful. The location is very convenient to downtown which was very helpful since we did not have a car, though the B&B has parking for guests behind the building. When we are next in Sligo, we will be sure to stay here.

We needed a place to stay. What we found was a small, very friendly traditional B&B/hotel that was a destination in its own right. The place has been there since St. Patrick was a lad. Actually The proprietor had grown up there while his father kept a pub on the premises. The landlord and his wife are the salt of the earth, and the pepper too. They graciously accommodated us for nights beyond our original booking. The full cooked Irish breakfast in the cheery dining room was magic. Ask the owner to tell you about the name. He might even sing you the song.

We stayed for two nights and we're very pleased with this accommodation. Liam and staff were very friendly and helpful. Our room was very clean and whilst it is a bit dated, it was very comfortable. Breakfasts were very good. The property is located close to the main tourist area of Sligo and within an easy walk. There is off street parking and the WiFi worked well in our room. The only issue we had was noisy guests in the next room on both nights as the walls are quite thin and you can hear everything which is a pain when some people want to keep making noise until the early hours but it is not something the owners are responsible for. Based on our experience we would recommend this property.
