Owner description: This award-winning Museum is home to the National Folklife Collection which represents traditional life in Ireland throughout the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Fascinating artefacts deal with domestic life, agriculture, fishing and hunting, clothing and textiles, furniture and fittings, trades and crafts, transport, sports and leisure and religion. Set in the spectacular grounds of Turlough Park, Castlebar, Co. Mayo the Museum treats visitors to a taste of how our ancestors lived their daily lives, in both difficult and joyful times. The excellent ‘hands-on’ public programmes which run throughout the year, consist of art and craft workshops, demonstrations and performances and runs alongside the exciting programme of temporary exhibitions which are ongoing throughout the year. Opening Times: The Museum opening hours are: Tuesday to Saturday 10am-5pm • Sunday 2pm-5pm • Closed Mondays (including Bank Holidays), Christmas Day and Good Friday. Admission to the National Museum of Ireland - Country Life is FREE. Shop & Café open.

I visit my family in Ireland and never miss a chance to visit this fantastic gem of a place. The entire museum from the grounds to the museum itself and the café are top drawer material. The staff are fantastic and helpful. I had my wee boys First holy communion event here and now will be hosting our American family and friends here in June cannot wait, I am so proud to have this place in Mayo

We were pleasantly surprised by the quality and variety of what was on display in this museum of Irish life from 1850 to 1950. Lots of exhibits to show things with relatively short explanations (which was good!).

Only fault is that the signage from the car park to let visitors know where to go is very poor. We and several others really struggled to find the museum with confidence in what is a small compound!

Definitely worth spending an hour.

Why would anyone try to to show the world what life was like in Ireland all those years ago inside a glass cabinet.l mean lovely old house and the grounds are suited to the old house which l am sure was a old estate and then turn around and build a modern glass building to show what old Ireland was like
