Unique and very good value

5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 14 Sept 2017
We were in Sri Lanka for six weeks, visting everywhere from Jaffna to Dondra Head and the places in between, and Strathisla was one of the most memorable places we stayed. With so many Sri Lankan hoteliers going down the Dubai route, it's great to find a place to stay that values Sri Lanka's unique heritage. Strathisla started life as a coffee planter's house (note, not tea. Coffee was the first attempt made to drag money out of the hills) and, though it's hard to believe now, the surrounding slopes were all clear felled for the coffee plantation. That's one of the exceptional things about Strathisla: the planting. Ask Peter, the owner, to talk you through the garden and how he has designed it - he really is an exceptionally gifted garden designer. What's particularly striking is how fecund the soil is. The garden looks mature, but much of it is only a few years old. Which also reminds me to tell you to look out for the book in the lounge which shows, in wonderful photos, how Peter and Mozelle, the owners, transformed the house into what it is today.

We were lucky enough to stay when Peter and Mozelle were there too, (they might be moving permanently to Sri Lanka, but when we left that was still undecided) with their three-year-old son Patrick and baby. They are gracious hosts but don't worry if they're not around, because Jeyakumar and Priya, the husband-and-wife manager and chef for Strathisla, are just as welcoming and Priya ranks as one of the finest cooks we found anywhere in Sri Lanka. Jeyakumar's knowledge of botany is exceptional and the short walk with him into the valley is more informative than the Spice Garden visits that tourists are usually dragooned into.

Strathisla makes an excellent base for day trips to Kandy and the Knuckles (although better for the Knuckles in the dry season, as the rains bring an explosion of leeches), although slow travelling times in the hill country mean that it's not possible to get anywhere much further than Kandy and Peradeniya in a day. It works even better as a base for trips to the southern part of what the tourist board insists on calling the Cultural Triangle although its older and much evocative name is the 'kings' land'; places such as Dambulla and Nalanda Gedige are easily reached from Strathisla, while the the hill country refuge provides pleasantly cooler night time temperatures.

With hotel and guest house prices rocketing, rather unjustifiably in my opinion, in Sri Lanka, Strathisla also provides excellent value for money in comparison to similar places to stay. We only hope the puppy will survive Patrick's attentions!

Many thanks AlbertusMinimus for your kind and may I say, marvellously well penned words.
It was such a pleasure having you and your gorgeous familly stay with us. You are such an interesting family - I'm still half expecting the dulcit sounds of Harriets recorder to emanate from the villa whenever I pass it. The good news is puppy Simba is still 'tailus-intactus' although Patrick still manages to pressure us about the possibility of purchasing a packet of medieval Knights whenever we pass a toy store. Anyway, hopefully our paths will cross again someday and please know that you are always welcome back here at Strathisla Bungalow. Warmest regards from all the team here, Peter

We stayed here for 3 nights and couldn't have been happier! The staff are absolutely amazing, so friendly and accomodating. Priars home cooked Sri Lankan food is to die for, I could live off her cooking!
The rooms are delightful and comfortable.
Loved the walk through the little village with Jayco as he showed us through the tea plantation and explained how all the spices are grown.

It felt like heaven staying here!

Thank you Peter, Mozelle and the whole team. We will definitely be back and will recommend your place to all friends/family!

We came here for 5 days and never wanted to leave. Pete, his wife Mozelle and their family are absolutely charming and so welcoming. All your needs are catered for, and then some, with advice and help on day trips and what to see throughout the rest of Sri Lanka. Waking up to do a yoga session, classical music playing softly in the background and the sounds and sights of local animals was pure heaven. The attendants Jayco, Mutti, Pria and several others were so kind and generous too. Definitely want to come back!

Room tip: All the rooms are great. We stayed on the lower level, but maybe request upper levels for view. All are great though!

Strathisla is a beautiful slightly off the tourist trail, hidden gem. Beautiful surroundings above a small river valley, with plenty of wild life and chances to observe local Sri-Lankan life. Peter and Mozelle, together with Jako and Priya, manage this grand old estate with intelligent hospitality and style. The food is truly excellent, and the old colonial rooms atmospheric and welcoming. Thoroughly recommend for short or long stays. We made a special trip to return for our last night. It was by the far the best place we stayed during our holiday. Thank you very much!

Room tip: all rooms are great

Lovely relaxed atmosphere in this great converted old house set in stunning tropical gardens that lead down to dozens of hectares of plantations, which you can visit on a guided walk by the friendly manager. Rooms are simple but nice. The food is the standout. Chef is the manager's charming wife, who was born in the house. It was the best food we had in 2 1/2 week holiday in Sri Lanka. Delicious and inventive.
Would heartily recommend this great guesthouse run by a very welcoming Australian couple. The only shame is that we couldn't stay longer!

We had the most relaxing time at Strathisla. To be able to stay in old world style tea estate accommodation in Sri Lanka with all the benefits of modern comfort was amazing, in every sense. The rooms, the food, the views and the local sights were all great and the sense of being in a secret paradise just topped it off. Jako and Priya and Prasad all made the stay easy and delightful. Great food Priya!

Room tip: The upstairs rooms are particularly delightful.
