The positives of staying at Castle Heather - good communication with owner by email (not phone or in person), the house was clean, essentials provided (coffee/milk/bread etc...), information sheet with wifi code etc... was useful, and the neighbours were friendly!
Unfortunately though, the house, which is situated on a large (pleasant enough) housing estate, was noisy. It was very creaky, had noisy pipes and we didn't sleep well at all during our stay. It was all pretty basic for the price. Oh, and the shower didn't work.
The worst thing though, is that it is impersonal but not private! At check-in, you just collect your key from a table and are not greeted by an actual person. The worst thing though was the strange arrangement with the central heating. It is set to come on twice a day, with instructions that if you want it to come on earlier, you press 'advance' and nothing else. Well, our visit was in AUGUST. It was boiling hot, and when we arrived the house was uncomfortably warm. My husband couldn't sleep on the first night because it was so warm. I saw no harm in putting it on to manual (and not pressing any other buttons), with the intention of putting it back to how it was when we left. However, I was woken at 6am by rushing, noisy pipes, and when I went to check the heating to see what was going on, it had been set back to the twice-a-day setting. I clicked it back on to manual so that it wasn't too hot for us when we got home. However, when we got home, it was back on the twice-a-day setting! My husband also noticed that a bill that had come through the door had been collected. So someone had been coming in every day! We have two young girls, and that is just too unsettling. You want to relax on your holiday, not think that someone (who you have never even met) is in your house.
Overall it was very over-priced - 593.45 for a 3 night stay.
