“Idyllic Highlands cottage”
Reviewed 16 June 2017 for a stay in June 2017

My wife and I stayed at Fern Cottage for a week in early June. The cottage is fifteen minutes drive from Beauly and about 40 minutes from Inverness. In spite of this, it feels very secluded, set back from the road on the side of a hill. The cottage is one of a couple on the owner's land, but they are well spaced and privacy is guaranteed.

The house was immaculate and has been well cared for. It features a bedroom, a bathroom, a large dining area with kitchen and a large living area with sofa bed on a mezzanine. It was ample for our needs. There's a wood burning stove, plenty of wood (and more if you need it) and house is bright and airy (lots of windows and skylights!) There's no washing machine, but there is a launderette in Beauly.

The grounds are beautiful and - a recurring theme - well kept. There are plenty of bird and animal feeders and this is a wildlife spotter's paradise. There are at least a dozen variety of birds feeding outside the bedroom window and on the first night we were visited by an adult badger. We didn't see the pinemarten, but a visit on the second night from a juvenile badger made up for this!

The cottage is well located with access to the A381 which takes you to Glen Affric (West) and to Inverness (East) and we were able to travel to Ullapool with little difficulty. Glen Affric is beautiful (though as of June 2017 there are a lot of hydro-electric works going on) and provides a number of jaw-dropping walks. Loch Ness was about 30 minutes drive away.

The people we met in the Highlands were among the friendliest I've ever encountered and the owners of this cottage can be counted among them.

I would recommend this cottage to anyone looking for a Highlands getaway. A lovely, romantic and immaculate cottage.

“Lovely cottage in a beautiful location.”
Reviewed 20 August 2016 for a stay in August 2016

The cottage was perfect, it's location is idyllic with stunning views from the front door. The interior is light and airy with modern appliances and the mezzanine was comfortable for relaxing to an old movie or reading a book. We had the log burner on a couple of evenings and it was shorts and t-shirts time, it must be extremely cozy in the winter. The wi-fi isn't the best but we only used it for planning our next day out. During our stay we encountered the Pine Martins, and a badger with a variety of birdlife. Mary and John have clearly put a lot of work into the grounds which are a joy to the eye. Beauly is about a 15 min drive and has local shops and fuel with Inverness around a 30 min drive away. The village of Struy was about a 20 min walk with the Cnoc Hotel about 15 mins perfect for a stroll with a decent menu and warm welcome. About 8 miles to the west is Cannich and from here you can drive and park up for a couple of forest walks which encompass Plodda Falls which are magnificent. Further afield but no more than an hours drive you may visit the Corrimony Stones, Urqhuart Castle, Culloden and Fort George, also worth the drive is a visit to Dunrobin Castle (approx 2 hours drive), the falconry display alone is amazing

“lovely cottage in a peaceful location”
Reviewed 9 July 2016 for a stay in June 2016

Fern cottage is set back from the quiet road in a beautiful woodland location. The cottage is very light, airy and spacious. Its very homely and very tranquil. We saw a pine marten in the garden everyday and sometimes 3 badgers during the evening. We also loved watching the birds on the feeders. If you enjoy nature and beautiful surroundings this is the place for you.
We did a lot of walking in the area and even managed a couple of runs.

“Beautiful location - light bright and comfortable”
Reviewed 4 April 2015 for a stay in November 2013

We had such a lovely week in Fern Cottage. What a fabulous peaceful location on the edge of the woods with the burn running by. We lost count of the number of birds we saw around the cottage and were thrilled to be visited by the Pine Marten! The cottage is lovely – so light and bright and comfortable, with cosy evenings in front of the log fire and Mary's hospitality was second to none. This is a fantastic base from which to explore - Glen Affric and Glen Strathfarrer were stunning in the Autumn sunshine – we walked miles! I’m sure we will be back”.

“Ferntastic!”
Reviewed 31 March 2015 for a stay in June 2014

“We really enjoyed our week at the Fern Cottage. What a nice place. Although located in a forest, the cottage is very light. It has a wood stove which contributes to a romantic atmosphere. The deer fence was hopeful, but unfortunately we have seen no red or roe deer. On the other hand, the grounds have plenty of birds and both badger and pine marten came to visit us every evening. There is a supermarket nearby in Beauly. We did some nice hikes in the vicinity (saw red deer), visited Ullapool, watched the dolphins at Fortrose and looked for the monster in Loch Ness. The location of the Fern Cottage makes it an excellent starting-point for exploring this wonderful part of Scotland. Together with John and Mary's hospitality it is highly recommendable..”
