Owner description: Hidden in the forest of Rothiemurchus, this beautiful place is one of the most loved in the UK. Loch an Eilein (loch of the island) with its 13th century island castle, was voted Britain's Best Picnic Spot as part of the celebrations to highlight the 10th anniversary of Warburtons National Bread Week which took place in May 2010 - a big thank you to everyone who voted. Step back in time and retrace the steps of the Highland cattle raiders as you enjoy views of the dramatic and mysterious Highland castle and enjoy the exceptional wildlife of the forest including Red Squirrels and Scottish Crossbills. You can enjoy some of the best low level walking in Scotland. Sheltered by ancient pine trees with views of the mountains, the path round the loch is suitable for motorised wheel chairs, off road buggies and is part of the 50km Rothiemurchus way marked network of paths.

We have visited the Loch so many times, and still it is so wonderful for us , we took our son and daughter-in-law there to see the wonder of the Loch and no one was disappointed , they where home for 3 wks from Australia. So peaceful .

Took a grand walk around this Loch today, beautiful sunshine this late in the year! Foot path is nice surface, wide, not too tough at all. We adventured around on the many small paths and had a grand time, beware the moor..it’s wet! But grand fun and beauty! I was worried about finding the car park, but follow the signs and it’s easy to find!

This is a ‘must visit’ for this area. Enjoy an easy walk around this beautiful loch. Also suitable for sturdy buggy. We walked, some ran the circular route then ran or cycled over to Loch Morlich, another recommended walk. Beginning November the small bothy shop has just closed for the season but there are toilets. The trees still had their golden leaves and the weather was mild and pleasant. The views across the loch are stunning. An excellent place to chill out and reflect. I am never disappointed. I always feel better after a visit to Loch an Eileen. Closest place on earth to heaven.
