Stunning walk a round the loch we always head for here as it sums up the highlands perfectly for a refreshing good lung full of Scottish air

We had only one day to have a quick look around in the area of Cairngorm National Park. One of the places we selected was this lake and it was a good choice. If you go to the proper parking area close to the lake, then one has to pay entrance fee. However this is worth it. The lake is beautiful and one has a nice view on the castle ruins on the little island.

We parked in the car park (£1.50 per person) and had a wonderful walk round the Loch. Took about an hour and a half to walk round but there is a proper path. Delightful scenery. There is a small bulding to get coffees etc afterwards - they also sell local handicraft. Well worth visiting this beautiful loch.

As a person who cycles about 3times a year - I was thoroughly relieved how easy the cycle was. All on pathways (a little muddy in areas), not too hard.
It took us 2ish hours to do the cycle down, around the Loch and back.
The dog loved it and everyone who we bypassed walking were friendly and in good spirits.
Stopped at a few locations for the dog to have a drink and admire the scenery. The colours were lovely and the wildlife (red squirrels) were abundant.
The kids and the adults were happy to splash at the entrance of the Loch (by the car park) and wash their bikes.

Loch an Eilein is an extremely beautiful lake, with reflections of the pines of Rothiemurchus Forest in which it lies and a ruined island castle - making this one of the most popular walks in Scotland. After leaving our car at the park (we paid £1.5 per person as parking charge, which seemed steep but proceeds go towards preserving the estate and its wildlife) and dropped by the visitor centre to receive instructions and a small map. With limited time we didn't walk around the entire lake (would take about 90 mins) but retraced back after hitting the castle.
