I trawled through a large number of other St Andrews rental properties before plumping for Cowper’s Close. The vast majority were your typical bland holiday rental: character-free zones with white walls, black leatherette sofas and glowering flat-screen TVs.
By contrast, the great attraction of Cowper’s Close is the warmth of its personality. As you can see from the photographs, the rooms are full of character, colour and variety. Despite the central location, the views are fantastic. You are overlooking the medieval gateway of the West Port at the front and a long, sunny and beautifully wooded garden at the back. Walking to the beaches, golf courses, parks and shops takes no time. For people who have elderly and not-so-mobile relatives, there is a convenient bedroom and bathroom on the ground floor. It is less than two minutes’ walk to the municipal car park, which is handy for keeping the car safe on weekdays when the local traffic wardens are on the prowl. Having stayed in this house for a week, I honestly wondered why I ever bothered to go to the continent. (It was the summer of Brexit, after all.) Superb!
