“OK if you want a student room with no frills; otherwise avoid at all costs”
Reviewed 22 February 2012

A depressing experience. Although this is billed as a decent place it is hardly what you might expect if it is a genuine hotel you are looking for. Where to start? The reception area and breakfast room are round the corner so if it is raining you are going to get wet going between them and your room. There is no lift, so you might find yourself walking up four floors with your luggage (I was on the third floor). You enter the room and find it is mostly taken up by the bed. There is no hook on the door to hang up your coat. There is no bedside light. There is an internet facility but you have to pay extra for it (wireless only in the restaurant apparently). The bathroom is tiny; the basin is so small you hit your head on the shelf when washing. The shower is a disaster all of its own - the head is fixed so you cannot adjust it, and it sprays out all over the place (the curtain is totally inadequate). In my room the heater did not work. The windows are not double-glazed and the street outside is cobbled - so lots of noise coming in; delivery lorries arrive at 6 am and stuff is being unloaded to the halls; the walls and doors are not sound-proofed, so other people coming in late or leaving early can disturb you.
The breakfast was good, but the waiter puts hot water into an unheated teapot, so your drink is cold.
On the positive side, the bed was very comfortable and the TV worked fine.

Room Tip: Ask for an inside room and no higher up than the first floor

We stayed here for one night and it was very good value for money. Its pretty basic and not very fancy but at £59 for a city centre location with a good breakfast what more can you ask. We were going to a concert in the Queens hall so it was only about a 5 minute walk and there are plenty of eateries round about.
No lift in the building and it does bring back memories of being a student in the halls of residence again but what the hell if you're just looking for somewhere to lay your head then I would recommend th Kenneth Mackenzie.

Room Tip: Small point, not sure if its the same in the other rooms but our "bathroom" had the loudes...

I'm in two minds about writing this review, one part of me wishes to keep this place secret so I can pitch up any old time and get a room-the other states I have a duty to my fellow travellers to let them know of this gem-Don't you just hate your conscience at times!
1.It's a university residence block-so rooms are basic but they're clean, warm and have decent beds, showers and tea and coffee facilities.
2.The block has 4 levels so 4 flights of stairs-no elevator.
3.The breakfast is served in the common room which is in the entryway of the next building on the block. The entryway also leads to the reception where you check in.Everything is signposted.Look for the signs at Eye-level on the buildings. The breakfast is very good.
4.Excellent location in the student district of the Old Town-so you can walk to the majority of the tourist sites. As it's in the student area-you can shop around and get better deals on eating and drinking etc.
5.To get to the hotel- get a bus that stops at Surgeon's Hall on it's route. However, you can walk from the rail station or bus termini to Richmond Place in 15-20 mins-so sort out your mapping, sort out your gear and get your boots on!
6.On day of leaving, ask them to look after your bags and go do some more stuff in the town.
PS:I'm going back :-)

Room Tip: If you have dodgy legs go for a room on 1st or 2nd floor-the block has no elevator.

Spent a lovely weekend at the Kenneth Mackenzie. The room was small but had everything you need for a stay there. It was quiet and central enough.. The breakfast was excellent with a great choice of fruit. We were able to leave our bags on arrival and also on our day of leaving. Great place to stay, we will definitely visit again.

It is a lovely hotel the staff are very welcoming and helpful only thing I could say was wrong was we were on first floor and others staying at hotel making a noise when they came in. It is only a short walk from the train station and only 2 mins in a taxi.
