“Great value and the breakfast is brilliant”
Reviewed 16 January 2012

Spent a lovely weekend at the Kenneth Mackenzie. The room was small but had everything you need for a stay there. It was quiet and central enough.. The breakfast was excellent with a great choice of fruit. We were able to leave our bags on arrival and also on our day of leaving. Great place to stay, we will definitely visit again.

It is a lovely hotel the staff are very welcoming and helpful only thing I could say was wrong was we were on first floor and others staying at hotel making a noise when they came in. It is only a short walk from the train station and only 2 mins in a taxi.

Spent a great weekend in Edinburgh. We stayed at the Kenneth Mackenzie which is part of the university and appears to be halls of residence. The room was small (room 305) but contained everything that was needed for an overnight stay. The beds, bedding and towells were clean and fresh. There was a Flat screen TV, tea and coffee making facilities and even a hair dryer. The breakfast in the dining room was superb. Cereal, toast and jams, fruit, yoghurt, cheese and full English were available with coffee, tea and fruit juice in plentiful supply.
The accommodation had a good view of The Salisbury Craggs and Arthurs Seat. It was about 15-20 mins walk from the Royal Mile (the Main City). There are lots of bars and eating places, in the vicinity of the accommodation, to suit all tastes. Our favourite was Frankenstines bar which was in a converted church. The food and drink was reasonably priced there.
There are loads of things to do and see in and around the city depending on what your interests are. We took a bus tour which lasted about an hour to see what there was. We walked part of the Royal Mile, visited the Castle the "German Market" on the first day. We also took a Ghost Walk that night which was great fun. We didn't see any ghosts but there were a few uneathly sights and I'll leave it at that. Finding somewhere to eat near to the Royal Mile was a little difficult with the numbers of visitors in the area. It wasn't that we couldn't get anything to eat but finding somewhere that we wanted to eat.
On day two we visited the whisky experience which was a pleasant insight into the "water of life" and was followed by a tasting. We later visited the National Museum of Scotland and spent the rest of our time in there. Entrance is free and there are 5 floors of exhibits to interest and inform all age groups. We could have spent more of our time in there it was so interesting.
We flew to Edinburgh abd the nbust from the airport to Waverley Bridge in the city took about 30 mins and cost GBP 6 return.
We are planning to return

As I discovered only days before, this hotel is not privately owned, but is operated by Edinburgh University and in fact on arrival this becomes totally obvious. The hotel is in a busy area of the old town, situated off the main road in a quite street, and is easily reached by foot from the city centre.
The building is a little like a dorm, but all rooms are en suite, quite, clean and comfortable with all the usual hotel amenities such as phone, coffee making etc but no lift. The one downside is that the showers are wet room style, which can make the floor quite wet for anyone using the bathroom later! On the plus side, the reception is staffed 24 hours and the staff are excellent, but the big bounus is the included breakfast which is one of the best and most varied I have ever had. In all, not what you might be expecting, but excellent value and a good place to stay in Edinburgh.

Room Tip: Lower floors on the front are best.

Stayed for one night while in Edinburgh for a meeting. The accommodation is basically like a student hall of residence in fittings and ambience. Room was compact, but reasonable basic level of facilities - and a flat screen tv. Bathroom very compact - but with a classy shower gel provided. The breakfast was actually pretty good. All in all, a reasonable central option, but no frills.
