Owner description: The Palace of Holyroodhouse is the official residence in Scotland of Her Majesty The Queen. The palace stands at the end of Edinburgh's Royal Mile against the spectacular backdrop of Arthur's Seat. This fine palace is closely associated with Scotland's rich history and is used by The Queen when carrying out official engagements in Scotland. The State Apartments reflect the changing tastes of successive monarchs, and are renowned for their fine plasterwork ceilings and unrivalled collection of Brussels tapestries. They are furnished with numerous fine paintings and other works of art, many of which have long associations with Holyroodhouse. The visit to Holyroodhouse includes Mary, Queen of Scots' Chambers and the Darnley Rooms, the setting for many dramatic episodes in Mary's short and turbulent reign. In the Palace's west corner tower are Mary's Bedchamber, described as 'the most famous room in Scotland', and her Outer Chamber, the scene of the murder of her Italian secretary, David Rizzio'. During the summer months, you can join a guided tour of Holyrood Abbey, which lies adjacent to the Palace in the spectacular setting of Arthur's Seat. Escorted by Wardens dressed in their ancient hunting Stewart tartan, you will learn about the building's extraordinary history.

Well kept palace, lots to see, would of liked more of the Mary Queen of Scots but has been taken over by English history and Buckingham palace stuff but well worth the visit

My sister and I walked down the Royal Mile on a rainy morning to be one of the first crews to explore the palace. We used the audio guides which were quite good. They don't let you take pictures inside however they sell a photo book on site that has snapshots of all the magnificent rooms and some of the keepsakes. I didn't want to buy it but after the tour I felt that I had to buy it so as not to forget all that I had witnessed. If you are into royal lineage and intense royal drama then you will love this tour. Mary Queen of Scots room towards the end was one of the best parts of this attraction. The staircase and ceiling and the hall of Scottish ruler portraits were also quite satisfying. Even the grounds (which you can photograph) were quite lovely. The cafe next door was convenient and a nice spot to reflect on all we had seen.

We visited Holyrood Palace whilst visiting Edinburgh, this was our favourite part of Edinburgh and it was enjoyable to see the Queen’s second home in Edinburgh! The free audio guide was very useful and told us lots of information that we did not know. Would defiantly recommend to anyone who likes the Royal Family.

If you enjoy ambling around stately homes
then you will enjoy this. The audio guide works well to talk you through the various
rooms.
