We stayed at The Principal for a long weekend and I have to say that all of the staff are a credit to the hotel. From the minute you arrive you are made to feel very special indeed. Nothing is too much trouble for any of the staff, all of which are extremely polite.
The adjoining Printing Press serves an amazing breakfast and the evening meal we decided to have there one night was delicious!
The rooms at The Principal are spacious, spotless and well appointed with everything you could possibly need including a nice touch of a welcome “tuck box” each day.
Being in the city centre does not mean it’s a noisy location either as the rooms are very well sound proofed.
All in all The Principal and it’s staff offer a great location for a lovely stay in Edinburgh.

Lovely hotel, with great customer service, nothing was two much trouble, We stayed for 3 nights over the Easter, our room included breakfast and a evening meal, which we chose to have on the first night. Food was really good, we both chose the fish and chips, the mushy peas were amazing, the waiting staff were attentive and very professional.
The rooms although on the small size are perfect. With every thing you need, a lovely rain head shower, and a selection of Elemis toiletries that smell amazing.
The rooms also include a tuck box which is filled daily with crisps and goodies for you to enjoy at no extra cost, the fridge also has bottled water and a small carton of fresh milk much nicer than the small milk tots you usually get in a hotel.
There is a decent hairdryer a iron and ironing board and a safe in room.
The beds are very comfortable. And there were lovely thick towels to use.
We had a really enjoyable stay. And will definitely be returning

We booked this hotel after looking at various reviews as we were considering moving to Edinburgh and were not disappointed, in fact the contrary. From the moment we arrived (and indeed at the telephone booking) everyone with whom we came into contact was efficient, knowledgeable and went the extra mile.
The reception staff greeted us as valued "friends" and after reaching our room we were delivered a special "offering" to encourage us to think well of the city - we were impressed!
We ate both in and out of the hotel during our stay and the restaurant staff were attentive and the food excellent. The concierge was able to offer suggestions that exactly suited our needs in the city. He was excellent.
We would definitely stay here again.

We stayed for 5 nights over Easter and chose the Principal because of the location and also after seeing the improvements that Principal have made to this hotel. Location is excellent for exploring the City either on foot or by bus. Although George Street is a prime shopping location the rooms were very quiet, even during 2 wedding receptions. Room size and facilities were great, with nice little touches like the complimentary tuck box. All stuff were very polite and friendly. I would highly recommend this hotel and will be returning

Started with warm greeting and reception staff who tried to match all our preferences for a room - even phoning a few times before our arrival to discuss these. On arrival I was asked which of our preferences was most important as all of them could not be matched. We had booked an upgraded room but were given a suite on the first floor which was lovely. Large room, lots of storage, walk in shower and bath, tuck box and fridge.

We parked our car (discount available to £10 per day) and walked back to the hotel - our bags were taken to our room by a member of staff with an apology that they hadn't already done so. The room was immaculately clean and the bed linen excellent quality and the bed huge. There was a little street noise on one night but as we were in a suite facing George Street this was not something the hotel could control (arguing young ment) but the double glazing and thick curtains deadened most noise.

Our rate included breakfast which was fine. There was a fairly limited continental breakfast, a Scottish cooked breakfast and hot drinks and toast were ordered from waiting staff. Espresso, cappuccino etc can be ordered and the coffee is excellent - jugged coffee a bit cold and tasteless.

There is no option to order different items and we had a few minutes wait to enter dining room on our first morning when the hotel was very busy. There were quite a few items missing on the hot breakfast table but that was rectified quickly. When a lot of guests arrived around the same time the room was a little chaotic and cramped but the staff were excellent and very hard working. The quality of the food was very good.

Overall our stay was very enjoyable and good value in a beautiful building. Staff were efficient and welcoming. The situation of the hotel is excellent with most tourist sites within easy walking distance and a convenient bus system outside the main door of the hotel taking you to Leith and the Shore. Parking was a ten minute walk away but excellent value in Edinburgh where parking is at a premium.
