“Fantastic Cottage Near Royal Mile”
Reviewed 16 August 2011 for a stay in August 2011

We had the pleasure of staying at this cottage for the first week of the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Despite rainy weather, this proved to be a wonderful stay.

The cottage is the former gatehouse to a brewery that apparently went defunct in the 1950s. It has been completely refurbished to a very high style. We thought it was cool to stay in a place that had a little bit of history.

The photos on the website are pretty accurate. This is an attractively decorated and comfortable cottage. We had no problem spreading out with our family of four. The kitchen/living room area on the second floor is bright and airy. I believe the kitchen countertops are granite.

The cottage is also well furnished in terms of conveniences. The parking slot is fewer than 10 steps from the front door, making it easy to move luggage etc. Frankly, the fact that there is parking at all is a plus, but having it so close was particularly nice.

The cottage is equipped with all kinds of appliances, including a washer/dryer, flat panel TV, etc. The wi-fi is fast and excellent and worked very well for a family with multiple networked devices (two laptops, two iPads, etc.).

The cottage is one block from the Royal Mile, and very close to the Scottish Parliament and Palace of Holyroodhouse. We had no problem in walking to all of the sights of Edinburgh (Royal Mile, Castle, Princes St., etc.) or in getting to the many venues of the Festival.

Susan McNaughton, the owner, is a delight to deal with and met us personally when we checked in, making us feel very much at home.

Overall, staying here was a terrific experience and we would stay here again without hesitation.

Wow, fantastic feedback - thanks so much!

Wonderful to share our cottage with a family who appreciate what we have tried very hard to achieve. Just a teeny tiny correction in case we mislead anyone - the kitchen worktops are not granite, but they are nice and shiny!

Climbing up Arthur's Seat is a favourite activity for guests at Craigwell Cottage, or you are short of time, then Calton Hill also affords great views of the city and there's a path VERTICALLY through the garden at Nether Craigwell (not for everyone...but if you're fit it's fun).

Thanks for the lovely comments about the cottage too. Hope to welcome you back soon for more family tree researching and family history visits.
