Description: For great food and wine and an old-fashioned good time, you can't go wrong with this delightful and traditional restaurant in Albany Street, Edinburgh. As you enter the dark, seductive dining room – filled with candles and tall palms – it will be a case of love at first sight and we guarantee you'll want to curl up in a corner and stay forever. The cosmopolitan crowd love the cosy, comfortable vibe, and we love the walls decorated with whisky-inspired poetry from a local writer. Signature dishes at The Magnum Restaurant include the rib-eye steak served with pink fir fries; the venison burger with chips cooked in delicious, salty beef dripping; and the tempura Peterhead haddock with lemon tartare and a green pea puree.

The Magnum is a classy restaurant and bar situated in New Town which we had the pleasure of staying near during our recent trip. We had an excellent dinner and enjoyed the place so much we ended up coming back several times for drinks during out stay. The staff were all very friendly and professional. Great place!

The food in this restaurant hit the spot. It was our last night in Scotland and we wanted to go for one last traditional Scottish meal. We had previously dropped some serious cash at one of the "must see" restaurants on the Royal Mile, but in hind-sight, the Magnum was far superior. We walked in off the street on a Friday evening, grabbed a pint at a bar across the street (although we could have stayed there) and were seated within an hour. The staff were super professional, friendly and multinational, which added to the vibrant, energetic ambiance of the restaurant. Over the course of our meal, we were attended to by servers from Ireland (love her!), Australia and Canada.
The food was honestly the best meal we had in Scotland. The Cullen Skink and Haggis Spring Roll appetizers were amazing. The Cullen Skink was a new find for us on this trip consisting of smoked fish, potatoes and green onions served in a light chowder. I think we had some every day we were in Scotland and the Magnum brought it home!
The massive bone-in rib eye (Cote du Boeuf), which was cooked perfectly, was an excellent choice for the main course too!
This restaurant is a must for any visitors to Edinburgh. We will definitely be back!

We visited the bar on our arrival and immediately felt like regulars. It has a really welcoming ambiance and the staff, especially Chris were attentive without being simpering.
The food was excellent but as is sometimes the case, the description of the meal is too grand. We should have liked a couple of vegetarian options or a least something a little lighter however we are probably in the minority where quantities are concerned. The wine was very good and Chris very attentive and knowledgeably not only about food and drink but also tourist attractions.
In we ever get the chance to return, we would certainly reserve a table!!!

Ate here in a group of 4 on Sunday 29th April 2012. I thought the menu was quite expensive but it is probably the norm for restaurants around this area.we ordered the chicken/bacon burger with chilli and sour cream, the beef/onion burger and the fish and chips. All meals were excellent.
HOWEVER what let this restaurant down was the service. there appeared to be only one waitress on and a bar man and there was too much work for them even with a few empty tables. our side orders were forgot about and by the time they came we had finished our mains. serviettes had to be requested also as they were not provided.
I also thought that the staff didn't seem bothered that our sides were missed as the waitress told us 'they must of went to another table' and the bar man wasn't too concerned when collecting our plates.
They did deduct the side from our bill (probably reluctantly).

overall

food good, atmosphere good, BUT service not great and could do with more staff which would probably eradicate the service issues above.

I would eat here again however

Went in for a meal with my wife. We chose from the bar menu. My wife had The fish and chips which looked great and I had the beef & Onion burger. My burger tasted great but i was disappointed with the 10 chips I had on my plate. My wife said the fish could have done with more seasoning as it was a bit bland.
Overall a lovely pub with great service but left disappointed.
