Had a wonderful week, Apartment lovely , very well equipped, comfy bed, warm fire when needed,, there was even milk, sugar tea and coffee, and a full salt and pepper pot, something you usually find you need but never provided The shower was really good and always plenty of hot water. We have stayed in, places where we have had to boil numerous kettles of hot water. The place was spotlessly clean. The bonus for us was watching the birds and 2 field mice from the kitchen window. There is a Spar shop nearby for anything you run out of, you can get take a ways on a Friday and Saturday night from Mill on the Fleece, we did, the fish is lovely. Hopefully we will be back next year

“A tiny bit of paradise!!”

This was a romantic week away with my partner, our first holiday together, our first visit to Scotland and no kids in tow so we had a lot of expectations, we weren't disappointed. Firstly we knew we were in for a treat just by the drive to Gatehouse Of Fleet from Sheffield. The scenery was stunning and we weren't disappointed when we arrived. What a beautiful little village 5 Tannery Brae is set in! Directions from Philip, the owner, made it very easy to find and he was so helpful in the weeks leading to our stay with my bombardment of emails with questions and queries but he never failed to respond and was really helpful.
Upon arrival at he cottage/apartment/flat, whatever you want to call it, we preferred cottage, we were greeted by a beautifully clean, welcoming and extremely well decorated home from home. It is actually much nicer than the photo's so we were even more delighted.
The open plan living room having a TV with built in DVD player, a stereo with iPod dock, a 2 seater sofa and 1 chair, wall mounted fire, which was lovely as it got a little chilly in the evening and free wifi, always a bonus, led onto the kitchen with 2 sweater dining table, oven, hob, microwave and everything you could possible need for a fantastic stay, wine glasses and a bottle opener being the most important ;)
The bedroom was beautifully decorated and overlooked the small back yard as does the kitchen, this is a real sun trap and has a small table and 2 chairs. It was lovely to sit out in the evening with a glass of wine. Back to the bedroom, lovely bed if a little too soft and comfortable with feather pillows and feather duvet.
There's a small shower room (en-suite) which was perfect. Lovely powerful shower!!
In the wardrobe was a clothes airer which was great to hang the towels on in the back yard but I did miss a washing machine. As I knew there wasn't one or any ironing facilities I was prepared for this and took my own iron, not easy to do with no ironing board, but I managed :) The washer I can live without for a week but I would definitely recommend taking an iron with you.
Overall the cottage is perfect, it's beautifully looked after, clean, tidy and ideal for a romantic break. The area is stunning, a real bit of paradise. We drove out to many places, Kirkcudbright, Castle Douglas, Whithorn, Wigtown etc etc and have simply fallen in love with Dumfries and Galloway and luckily we're heading to Wigtown for a week in August with the kids.
We will definitely stay at Tannery Brae again, it was a perfect week, the weather was amazing, (we really did fall lucky) the cottage is beautiful, the area is stunning. We really didn't want to come home.
I would recommend Tannery Brae to anyone and everyone as it's just beautiful. Thank you to the Philip & Wendy for letting us share your beautiful home from home.

Management Response
6 May 2014
We’re both bewildered and mortified by this, our first, tripadvisor review. We’ve had over a dozen guests in the apartment since we commenced letting it out last Autumn. Without exception each and every one has had only good things to say and the reviews on the booking section of our website confirm this as does the ‘visitors book’ in the apartment itself.
We only found about the problem when, as is our custom, we emailed these guests after their visit asking if they’d enjoyed their visit and found everything to be ok. We received an email reply suggesting some problem with the cleanliness when they entered into the apartment. The problem is detailed in their email to me stating,
‘the property is really lovely but. It appeared not to have been cleaned from previous occupant we cleaned the fridge and oven door the bathroom bin, also I would have liked ironing facilities. But we thoroughly enjoyed our stay your property is just lovely’
I telephoned to discuss and spoke to the lady guest and we had a very friendly conversation and I told her I understood her concerns and apologised. Our cleaner had been unwell for a couple of weeks and this has undoubtedly contributed to any problem though we don’t offer that as an excuse. We’ve spoken to her and she was unaware she’d ‘missed’ anything that particular changeover
The review, I believe, was written before our ‘phone conversation and my concern is that the narrative of the review suggests the apartment hadn’t been cleaned at all after the previous guest had left. This, from the lady’s email’ is patently not the case.
On the question of ‘no clothes drying facilities and no ironing facilities’ none are mentioned in any of our advertising. The apartment is one bedroomed so exclusively for couples and we haven’t considered it necessary to provide such items. If we provide drying and ironing facilities here would we then have to provide a washing machine? We’ve stayed in many similar properties ourselves in the past and have never had nor expected them.
On the question of scoring we’re given 2/5 for both ‘overall condition’ and ‘quality of facilities/amenities’ and are completely in the dark as to what other problems they encountered to give such a poor score. Although we’ve emailed to ask, we’ve had no response whatever. We set the apartment up as recently as last year spending over £7k to decorate and kit it out, virtually everything being bought new. We initially set it up for ourselves before deciding we’d let it out at times of the year we were unable to use it.
In conclusion, the review is in itself contradictory as, in their email to us and also the review, the apartment’s described as lovely, the email says they’d thoroughly enjoyed their stay and the review says they’d be happy to recommend to their best friend …………… hence our bewilderment.
