I booked this hotel for a birthday surprise for my wife. Booked it around 5 months previous on a special deal. When we arrived we were pleasantly surprised to find we had been given a complimentary upgrade to a `superior` room on the 10th floor, room 1019, just up the corridor from the suite where Bill Clinton had stayed in his 1998 visit to the city. The receptionist, Thomisina, was really friendly and went out of her way to make us feel welcome. Also gave us a complimentary ticket for a free cocktail each in the residents Piano bar which was a really nice touch.
Our room was at the front of the hotel, over-looking the iconic Crown bar. Another great touch was the fact that there was a platter of petit-fours waiting in the room for us, with Happy Birthday written on the plate in white chocolate! I had mentioned when making my booking that it was for my wife's birthday but never thought we would have had such good customer service that was heaped upon us! My wife really appreciated it all. The room itself was nice with all the usual's, with added free bottles of water. The room had a certain style, although it must be said the style is still that of the late 20th century rather than contemporary. But still a really relaxing, clean and spacious place to spend a night and we had a great nights sleep.
At the end of our evening we partook of our complimentary cocktails, and a few more. Excellently prepared by the friendly and helpful Laura. A nice way to finish our night.
The included breakfast the next morning was, unfortunately a bit of a mixed bag. I had the nicest porridge ever, with a dollop of honey, first. But the cooked breakfast let the meal down, as most of the items in the buffet were being heated by van-maries, but they just weren't warm enough. Also some of the items available were hard, possibly due to sitting under heating lights too long? I couldn't believe that a hotel that excelled in every other area could not serve an excellent, warm breakfast. The staff, however, were again. Really friendly and helpful.
Over-all our stay in the Europa was excellent and if we ever source a similar deal again we wont hesitate to return. Despite the issue with the breakfast, our visit to the the most iconic hotel in Belfast was made an experience not to to be forgotten by all the staff members we had any dealings with. A credit to the hotel!
