Nice classy hotel

4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 11 June 2024
Nice classy hotel, but in the refurbishment they chose a very weird wallpaper for the rooms. It was the actual Coal Exchange Building at the time coal was the black gold in Wales. Good location, walking distance from the lovely Mermaid Quay and the new part of the city around the piers, the Millennium Centre, Techniquest, Pierhead Building and lovely restaurants and bars (although few). Lovely staff, very friendly and always willing to help. There as some car parking places on the street in front of the hotel. It´s free from 5 pm till 8 am but you can download the local app or use the machines onsite and pay for the rest of the time. Luke at the front desk was super kind. He also helped us to find a restaurant where we can have a good bowl of authentic cawl.

Evening Nora2012_12,

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback about your recent stay with us at our hotel. We're thrilled to hear that you enjoyed the location, which is indeed one of our greatest assets. The proximity to Mermaid Quay, the Millennium Centre, and the other attractions in the area is a major perk for our guests.

We're also pleased to hear that our staff were friendly and helpful, and that Luke at the front desk went above and beyond to assist you. We're proud of our team and will be sure to pass on your kind words.

However, we did want to address one aspect of your stay that didn't quite meet your expectations - the wallpaper in the rooms. We understand that it may be a bit unconventional, but we were trying to pay homage to the rich history of the area by incorporating elements of the old Coal Exchange Building into the design. We appreciate your feedback and will take it into consideration as we continue to evolve and improve our product.

Once again, thank you for choosing to stay with us, and we hope to welcome you back again soon.

We were a little worried when we got to site Waze said was the hotel as it seemed to be closed and going through extensive renovations - scaffolding covered the walls. However, finding the outside entrance to the lovely restaurant, the extremely pleasant waitress told us where to go. WiFi was not working. Room was dark and a little dingy. Bathroom lovely though hence the 4 stars. And the restaurant - just wonderful:

The building is quite majestic and sympathetically restored and decorated in the public areas and the staff were lovely. We’re local so knew part of the exterior hadn’t been finished - it didn’t affect the inside. We had to ask to swap rooms because the neighbouring room was playing extremely loud music (adjoining door probably didn’t help but it was also crystal clear in the corridor). There was no issue at all, the staff empathised, and we were allocated a new room.

The original room did look very worn and paintwork marked and the chair needs to be replaced (143 for any staff reading this). The new room was much better but details were lacking when it was decorated - above the bed there was a lovely (and interesting) narrative about Captain Scott and the terranova but there were large, white (paint?) marks all over it which spoilt it. It seems the decorators were slapdash and how this got past sign-off I don’t know.

Considering the size of both rooms (our second room was huge), we couldn’t understand why the beds were a standard double. What made it worse was that the mattresses were extremely soft so if you went near the edges, the edge would crumple and you would roll off. It did seem like the hotel had just cheaped out on buying small beds. We regularly stay in hotels and have rarely had a standard double - especially in a hotel that claims to be luxurious. It was one of the worst night’s sleep my husband and I have had in a hotel. We have a double at home so it’s not like we’re used to a big bed - the squashy mattress just didn’t help because we couldn’t utilise the whole width of it.

Good pillows. Awful street noise - everything from traffic and people to seagulls - but it’s a listed building so I’m guessing it’s out of the control of the hotel. I’d advise earplugs. There are a lot of cobwebs outside the windows but no excuse for the cobwebs Inside the windows at shoulder level. Attention to detail again lacking

Jacuzzi bath was nice but it’s a bit awkward to get out of as there are no hand-holds and it’s huge. When it came to showering in the morning I was a bit concerned about slipping on the bottom of it - especially as there was poor drainage - and had to hang on to the towel holder to get in and out. It was a bit of a clamber. I’m fit and able but would be concerned for anyone that’s slightly infirm. As there was no shower curtain the water also went all over the floor. To be fair it was a good shower though, which is always important to me

The breakfast buffet was great - lots of choice - and the staff were again very friendly and helpful

On balance, going off our poor night’s sleep and the quality of the workmanship (there were other issues like bad mastic just left in the bathroom), along with the worn and marked decor in the rooms, I don’t think we’ll be returning. We stood in silence for a while on the balcony of the ballroom, pondering on the history of it and those that had come before us - atmosphere oozes out of the walls - but we did joke that the area had become a dumping ground for all sorts from furniture to odd plastic gloves and spray cleaners, which did spoil it. It did make us wonder if we were supposed to be there but it’s marked as a fire escape and has a glass door that invites you in to look at the room from above. It really is a lovely building but to be called luxury it needs a fresh pair of eyes looking over it. The hotel is selling itself on things like jacuzzi bath but forgetting the smaller details, which is a shame because it should be so much better than the modern, characterless hotels that Cardiff is full of

Lovely hotel, staff were very friendly and helpful. The bar and food area was also very nice and rooms had a nice character to them. Only thing we would say is that the room could have been cleaner. When the bath was filled there were bits in the bath so we had to empty and give it a clean. The water also wasn’t piping hot but manageable.
