What a fantastic place for a hotel! beautiful views and a perfect setting along the canal. this place could be exceptional but there are a few points that let them down. staff are very polite and helpful but need a little more training they need to be more "switched on" and customer focussed. We ate there on the first night. the menu was very basic I went for the lamb which was very tasty and my husband had the steak which was okay, we had eaten most of our dinner before the veg arrived. We asked for sauce with our breakfast but by the time it actually arrived we had eaten it, they really should then have got it right the morning after, but alas no sauce again. We, and several guests were left hanging round the hotplates waiting for them to be refilled. it is an old building but needs a bit of TLC. Again, the housekeeping staff were busy, but just missed taking a little more time to check over the rooms. we shared our with a lovely big spider called "Fred" who made his home on the net curtains. would have chucked him outside but it looked like he had lived there years and we didn't want to evict him. Hence the window ledge was covered in Fred's left over fly carcass's. Nice big fluffy towels, beds ok. Had to ask for them to change one of the duvets as it didn't look that clean, which they did no problem. old style TV which would benefit from being changed to a flat screen. Excellent bar with character. good place for touring bit of a walk along the canal into Llangollen.

You wil struggle to find a better location for a hotel. To wake up and look out on to the hill housing Castell Dinas Bran is quite something. The other side of the hotel has a similar "wow" view of the river. This really should be a fantastic hotel.

Someone commented on the drive to the hotel. It suggests a visit to a great venue. Sadly, there is a lot of work that needs to be carried out before this hotel can be described as a lovely place. Much of the work is reasonably straight forward. The hotel just doesn't make the most of itself. The one thing that it is blessed with is its stunning location. Given half a chance customers will simply want to sit out and take in the wonderful views. Yet, the grounds are not well kept and there is totally inadequate outdoor furniture in place. The front of the hotel could be relatively easily transformed by having a proper outdoor garden leading easily from the current bar. The place is in need of a good sweep, proper signage too as well as a lick of paint.
The room we were allocated made us feel as though we had time travelled back fifty years. I am all for there being a sense of traditional furniture but this appeared to be ordinary dark wooden stuff that had seen better days. The furniture didn't close properly and two doors were kept closed with hair bands. The bathroom was small and in need of renovation. The actual door to the room didn't lock easily from the inside or the outside and it seemed to have been damaged at some point and not adequately repaired.
Some of the public areas were impressive. Large carpeted lounges with plenty of comfortable seating for some quiet reflection and reading. Breakfast was adequate and the large dining room had the potential to be a lovely room. The staff were friendly and efficient. The hotel was quiet and the four members of staff we saw were all helpful.
Having stayed at several local hotels we left Bryn Howel with a sense of frustration. This hotel should be amazing but some investment in terms of money, care and attention is needed.

Room Tip: Views from the grounds

Arrived here for surprise birthday weekend treat booked by my hubby . Splendid drive down the track all tree lined meeting in the middle like an archway . Large car park black and white building beautiful grounds. Stepped inside and was initially disappointed as it was really old fashioned inside dark leather furniture and dark wood panelled inside . But reserved judgement . Given our keys to room 4 1st floor . Very quiet room beautiful views again very old fashioned furniture but everywhere clean . Bed beautiful and extremely comfy and the pillows thick sumptuous towels . Had a bar meal first night food was lovely and plenty of it great value for money staff very helpful nothing too much trouble . Great nights sleep , breakfast buffet poached eggs which were lovely sausages lovely and to be honest nothing missing again very pleasant staff . Had a lovely day out came back had an afternoon nap room had been serviced . Ventured out Saturday evening and certainly wish we hadn't as this place takes some beating food wise and very pleasant hard working staff . If you want ultra modern don't come here but if you want great views great service great food and quiet relaxing atmosphere then this is the place for you
You need to get real ale in on tap or at least in bottles . Our bathroom needed regrouting desperately then it would have been perfect

Stayed here on Wednesday 10th August 2016. Beautiful position in the valley and a great lead up to the hotel via a tree lined entance. Building is mainly very old and authentic. Loved the ornate ceiling in the bar/lounge. Chise a superior room but disapointed due to the out dated aspects. A nice four poster and some modern painting, however the on suite was from the 70s with white melamine boards. Staff were friendly, but reception should provide guests with facilities and direct to rooms rather than be asked. Breakfast was very well cooked set us up for the day. In summary,a nice hotel but in oarts out of date and neglected, but thats just me being super critical. I WOULD STAY HERE AGAIN.

We last stayed here several years ago and places do change but we were disappointed.

Rooms are tatty although the views are amazing and the bed wasn't comfortable - new mattress needed in room 11! Shower over bath was ok and the towels were very good.

Dinner was ok but we remember the food being really good here - not the case any longer sadly. Staff were all friendly and helpful - needs a shot in the arm to keep, afloat perhaps?
