We were fortunate enough to be the first paying guests in the Nightingale Suite to celebrate our Wedding Anniversary. The house has just been re-furbished to its original condition and is sumptuous. One must remember that it is still a work in progress with some minor exterior ground work going on, nothing to worry about though. A swimming pool and spa are still under construction, about a year away!! Can’t wait!
The staff were very helpful and welcoming although some were a little nervous. However, given they were a totally new team (many never having worked in a hotel before) and this was their first "real" guest weekend I felt more than a little sympathy. Over our 2 day stay you could see them beginning to grow in confidence. It will come.
The rooms and building are fabulous. The restaurant is a great place to eat with a varied menu and delicious food. We sampled the afternoon tea (on two days), which due to a promotional opening offer was very busy and booking is recommended. This also was fantastic. A three tier cake stand full of goodies and all ours! Only one point, the making of tea seems to be a mystery here, and at afternoon tea and at breakfast we had to ask for the tea to be re-made with a sufficient amount of leaves to actually impart some flavour and colour.
There were a few small teething troubles due to it being the first guest weekend, but the real test of a good hotel is how these things are dealt with, and the manager couldn't have done more to put things right.
However, it's new, people are learning, they have a very good starting point and it will become right. Visit here and you won't be disappointed. It's very special.
Many thanks to the General Manager Mr Mark Rawlings-Lloyd, Warwick the Maitre d', the Chef (apologies I can't recall your name) and all of the staff who made it such a wonderful stay.
