We have stayed at City Nites 4 times before so, when we were visiting the NIA again, we couldn't decide whether to return to City Nites as it was looking a little shabby and need of refubishment the last time we were there. We decided to return as we know it and its so convenient for the NIA and local restaurants and pubs.
When we arrived, we were told we had been upgraded , at no extra cost, to a suite.
Wow! It was fabulous. 2 double bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, windows everywhere. It was beautiful. All on its own on the top floor and a total surround terrace looking out across Birmingham. We thought we'd won the Lotto.
Now we've been spoiled and I will have to investigate how much the suite is next time we book.
One niggle was that the bedding was the thickness of an After Eight mint and it was a little chilly. We did find another cover in the cupboard, though, and I'm sure Reception would have found more if needed.

Room Tip: Check out the price of a suite. They are worth it.

Stayed here on a business trip to the NEC. We were bumped out of other apartments due to overbooking so this was not my first choice. We had wanted to stay nearer New Street Station so that we could walk there and these apartments are a good mile away from the station. We also thought when we arrived that we had been posted to the middle of nowhere as we couldn't see on any maps how to cross the canal to get to Brindley Place. However on night 2 we ventured up the road and round the side of the NIA and found the way across to civilisation at Bridley Place and Broad Street. Taxis to the city centre cost about £7 and only take 10 mins.
The apartment was spacious and well equiped (except no dishwasher) and very quiet at night. I found my bed a bit lumpy (it was 2 singles strapped together with no mattress topper) and I don't think the duvet would have been big enough for two people.
Free wi-fi was good. The kitchen could have been a bit cleaner and we washed some of the crockery before using it.

Love the idea of appartments rather than hotels mainly due to space....bedroom, bathroom, living room and kitchen. I also love the idea of coffee, made in a mug with fresh milk!!

This wasn't the best appartment I'd stayed in though.....Main moan would be the curtains, ill fitting and very cheap and thin allowing light in. Lights that didn't work.
It also hadn't been cleaned very well and I smelled smoke as soon as I walked into it, drink ring marks on bedside cabinets and a smelly bed throw. The cream coloured carpet was also really grubby - why didn't they have a mat at the front door?

Cheap and a great location.....but certainly not luxury.

There's 'Pay & Display' car parking all around which is free between 6pm and 8am.....a little cheaper than the £10 per day car parking.
The advertised 'use of a local gym' will also set you back £10 per day :(

Location & Access: These modern apartments are located in several blocks less than 5 minutes walking distance from the NIA and about 10 minutes to the ICC, Symphony Hall and Brindley Place. Easily accessible, about 20 minutes walking distance from New Street Station and the Bull Ring. Nearest supermarkets – a 24hr Tesco Extra (Ickneld Street) and a Sainsbury’s local (Broad Street) – both about a 15 – 20 minute walk. On street limited meter parking and off street secure parking for £10 per night. It is possible to view the property on Google Earth Street View. Reception and Public Areas: Reception is in an office in a building separate from the accommodation. The staff were very welcoming and helpful; better than many a hotel I have stayed in. I arrived nearly 2 hours before official check in time and they quickly completed all the formalities and found me an apartment that was ready for occupation. The room rate was the best I could find in Birmingham but added to that is a refundable deposit of £250 to cover any damages. Some Reviewers have commented that this has caused them problems – but this was certainly not my experience with only the charge for the room appearing on my bank statement. In reception there were local maps, tourist information and even leaflets/menus for local restaurants that offer a delivery service. Guests are provided with a plan showing the location of their allocated apartment block. Entrance to the apartment blocks are secured with a key pad door entry. Doors to the apartments are operated by traditional lock and key. Unlike hotels there are no “public areas”. Corridors and stairs were clean and simple. A lift served all floors. Food & Drink: The property operates a self catering regime. It is possible to pre order items for breakfast and wine/snacks etc. Helpfully there is a small supply of tea, coffee and fresh milk sachets. There were no other basic cooking essentials such as salt, pepper and olive oil. However, there was a satisfactory supply of cleaning materials including tablets for the dishwasher. My Apartment: On the 1st floor was spacious with a hallway, sizeable bathroom, lounge dining/kitchen and an ample sized bedroom. It was possible to open windows for fresh air. However, as the temperature was verging on freezing the efficient electric heaters in all rooms were appreciated. The main living area had a dining table and chairs for 4 persons and 2 x 2 seater leather settees. For entertainment a basic flat screen TV with freeview channels. Free wifi had good reception. A folder with basic local information. Lighting was reasonable with an occasional lamp and ceiling spot lights. A fully equipped galley kitchen had units with a fridge freezer, 4 ring electric hob, extractor fan, full sized oven, microwave, toaster, washing machine, dishwasher and sufficient pots, pans, crockery, cutlery and glasses (not all sets were complete or matching). The bedroom contained a large double (which was in fact two singles joined together). Pillows, duvet and white linen were clean. Two bedside tables with table lamps. A built in mirror wardrobe had plenty of storage space. In one of two storage cupboards in the hall was an ironing board, iron and cleaning equipment. The bathroom had a full sized bath and an efficient powerful shower, a good sized washbasin with modern fittings a large mirror and spot lighting (let down by one of the bulbs not working). A range of toiletries were available. Enormous white bath sheets and hand towels. Plain carpeting throughout with wooden laminateflooring in the living/dining area and ceramic tiles in the bathroom. The paint colours on most walls were mainly neutral but the accent colour on the living area wall was dated and might not suit all tastes. Otherwise there was very little decoration or ornamentation. The drapes looked “cheap” and the ones in the bedroom did not hang properly. Noise insulation was good and the block is in a reasonably quiet road. Negatives: Lack of attention to detail. e.g. light bulbs not working, mismatched glasses and cutlery, microwave turntable inoperable, bathroom blind in need of repair or replacement (all minor issues and should be easily resolved). I am not a fan of notices – but you will find everywhere (even in the lift) signs reminding guests about the £250 deposit and the £100 fine for breaching the “no smoking” rule. Summary: A good property close to the heart of Birmingham city centre. An excellent alternative to local hotels X Factor: I found the reception staff and the manager Dee to be exceedingly welcoming and helpful. All the comforts of home make City Nites an agreeable choice for an economical stay in Birmingham. The location is ideal for anyone visiting the NIA or ICC/Symphony Hall.
