It was originally designed to have four lifts in the core but the paternoster replaced two of them during the design stage, to get easily between nearby floors, without waiting for a lift or using the stairs. Sometimes people travelled full height in the paternoster to avoid waiting for the two remaining lifts.
It was a great place to study and had marvellous views all round. Still is?
A myth says the top floors are always lit to warn planes. Er, no. It's the architecture students working late, or through the night.
Lots of local tv, radio and phone transmitters now hide behind the louvred top section.
A strong wind bouncing off the front makes it difficult to walk to the doors, but once there you get sucked in!
A recent refurb is apparently not particularly successful. A current student tells me the wind still whistles in at every window (as in the 60's and 70's, and they complain about bad layouts and details.

Living nearby, I used to take my kids up in the paternoster to admire the views. Now there are security guards, and I suspect the unauthorised won't get in. Great views if you do manage to get to the top.

The Arts Tower is of interest from an architectural perspective and it is of interest due to the Paternoster lift system. I studied languages here many years ago and now it seems to be totally architecture students. It is a Sheffield icon.

The arts tower has been a local landmark in sheffield since the 1970s and is an important way point for local astronavigation. Best viewing is late a night in June when you can spot the architecture students doing an 'all nighter' to finish their final project, by the light in the upper storey windows

Have been looking at the various listed attractions in Sheffield to give a fair appraisal from my point of view and rate appropriately. And came across the Arts Tower on the list ??!!!! Please..... iamdanj and Lol_10045 are totally correct here. It's a BUILDING !. And that's about it. If it had lovely ornate artwork somewhere or was an early incarnation of the Shard or the Petronas Towers then fair enough - but it's a BUILDING and nothing more !! And an ugly one at that in my eyes... Not wishing to end on a negative - the Hendersons Relish factory is just down the road hence a poor not a terrible simply based on location !!

Thank Tarndy
