I took a taxi from the rail station. The cab driver mentioned that he had never heard of this particular guest house. This is not surprising as there doesn't seem to be a board at the front of the property. Moreover, the front is unkempt, and gate to the garden is cob-webbed and ill maintained. Not impressive at all.
The host is very warm, kind and welcoming. The room, stairway and passage was clean and well looked after. I was in Room 7 on the 2nd floor. Room facilities are as promised. I was surprised at how much can be nicely tucked into a very small space. The fridge had two 500 ml bottles of water, bless. I also liked the fact that there were dishes, knife and fork for eating in. My only note would be that, what appeared to be clean white dish-bowl, actually had a coating of dust! Thankfully the flat plate kept underneath the dish-bowl didn't, so I used it after washing with water. Also, on the third morning, I found the 'clean' coffee cup not so 'clean'! And I used the water glass instead to have my morning coffee in my room.
The shower and toilet are very small, but nicely planned, and I was not uncomfortable. The shower did not have a door, rather, shower curtain. The only thing unpleasant was that there was black mould in the tiles, which are signs of poor...I took a taxi from the rail station. Nicolai is very kind, but I would not say professional. For example he messed up with breakfast times which ended up in me waiting for half an hour, and then still on no show, I had to leave, but by that time I was already late for the initial part of my conference talks. I did not take the risk the next day. So the neat effect was that I ended up buying my own breakfast on two days. That said, he apologised multiple times later on for the miss. On the third day, and on his kind repeated invitation, I did have my breakfast. Do note that his kitchen is not visible though, and even the juice and toast are served by him from his kitchen.
The back garden was visible from my window, and quite mediocre - no flowers in this marvellous English summer! In fact, just on the right is an unkempt car park, and what seemed like a garage. And there were loud verbal fight one morning with lots of shouting....not pleasant at all.
Overall, I must say I was quite disappointed with my reliance on tripadvisor ratings for this hotel. On closer look, I found that the hotel did fare well during 2013-14; we are in 2017! In addition, the locality is shabby and run-down. I wouldn't recommend this hotel for business trips such as mine. On the other hand, for budget travellers, this may be an option.More
