We arrived on Friday evening for a one night stay with dinner, bed and breakfast. The car park seemed pretty empty when we arrived at around 4.00 pm and we were directed to our ground floor room which had a patio door leading into the garden which would have been nice if the ground hadn't been wet under foot. The room itself and ensuite seemed clean but despite fiddling with the radiators we couldn't get the heating to work.

We decided to go to dinner at 7.00 pm (the Receptionist's suggestion). The dining room looked lovely with pleasant views across the grounds - but there wasn't another soul in sight which made for an odd experience. The dinner menu was very limited in choice and we struggled to choose something we fancied even though we aren't fussy eaters. I chose smoked salmon for starter but was then informed that this wasn't available and the "waiter" who was also doubling up as the bar staff persuaded me to have the soup. Two bowls of soup subsequently arrived but no bread or roll. My husband had to hunt down the waiter to fetch some bread and in the meantime the soup got cold. We felt that none of this boded well for the rest of the stay and so we started to leave the restaurant at which point the waiter returned to ask what was wrong. He then explained that he had to go and defrost the bread for us - we decided this definitely didn't encourage us to want to stay for the remainder of the meal.

We decided not to stay at the hotel and packed our things and left - it was not the relaxing break we had needed and hoped for. No sign of management at all during the brief time we were there.

Dear elizabethhM8529HI

Thank you for your review and feedback.

I am so sorry to hear you did not enjoy your stay with us.

Unfortunately, we were quiet on that Friday evening so there were not many other guests around.

I will ensure we take on-board the rest of your criticisms in an effort to rectify the issues you have mentioned and ensure they do not happen again.

Thank you again for your feedback.

David

Was very nice to start off with, although the dinner was not up to much so we went out. on our return we had a few drinks at the bar and headed up to our room just after 11pm. We were rudely awoken at 4am by a mini riot (no Joke) of a group of lads running around slamming doors and trashing the place, In the morning there were food cartons on our balconey and food all over it, it was disgusting, and we had no sleep. Apparently the "Lads" checked in late at night, with cash and no details were taken, just one name for a party of 3-4 (obviously made up). This is very poor management, and we were offord no refund or discount and got charged the full £173 to stay in the middle of a riot with no sleep. There were next to no instructions on how to contact the hotel management and the hotel is not staffed overnight. I was going to confront the group, but my girlfriend thought I'd be outnumbered and they were obviously looking for and causing trouble.
It is not nice to stay in a room with no security and adding to the fact they let anyone one in late at night, when they must have been obviously inebriated and would not give any contact details, shows a total disregard for their guests and left my girlfriend very scared.

DO NOT STAY HERE.

Room Tip: Avoid at all costs

Dear CBJ1972

Thank you for your review.

I would firstly likely to sincerely apologise for the reckless behaviour of these other guests. This was a very unfortunate incident, the likes of which we've not had happen before. The police assisted in the prompt removal of these guests from the hotel.

With regards to us not being staffed overnight, there is always a member of staff on call should any guest require anything.

In the guest information pack in the room are various numbers for you to phone to reach a member of staff, including emergency numbers. There is also a card next to the phone with instructions on how to reach a member of staff after hours.

I would like to again sincerely apologise that your stay with us was ruined.

I do hope you might afford us the opportunity to demonstrate that your experiences on this occasion are not indicative of the standards we maintain.

Should you decide to return to us, let me assure you that I will personally ensure your stay is an enjoyable one.

Best regards

David

Had a lovely stay here. Perfect distance from city centre and staff could not be nicer. I really appreciated the homely feel that chain hotels cannot offer, mix that with helpful staff and this is a winner.

The hotel is small compared to most in Oxford and therefore not as many staff, but we wanted for nothing and found everything prompt and efficient as well as very personable.

Greeted by a real fire in reception and then shown to our room where we had an amazing view over the garden.

Food was excellent and breakfast was very enjoyable with great views.

Can't wait to visit again!

No idea what the hotel is like, because we (and several friends) booked rooms for a Saturday night in September, and some weeks after booking and receiving a confirmation email we received the following astonishing email:

"I am sorry to inform you that we have had to cancel your reservation for the 24th of September 2016.
Unfortunately, since making your reservation we have had a provisional wedding confirm and, as a result, they will be taking all of the bedrooms and require exclusive use of the hotel.
Unfortunately, we cannot offer alternate accommodation as we are an independent hotel".

So they already had a provisional wedding booking when they took our reservations, then just dumped us because they had a more lucrative opportunity. Never heard of a hotel doing that before, but they probably make so much money out of a wedding that they don't care whether we ever go back. Well we won't.
